Game Story

TORONTO (Ticker) -- Dirk Nowitzki recovered from a slow start and scored 25 points in the final 18 minutes to lead the Dallas Mavericks to a 115-105 victory over the Toronto Raptors, who have lost three straight games.

Nowitzki did not make a shot in the first 30 minutes of the game but became unstoppable after he hit his first jumper with just under seven minutes to go in the third quarter. The 7-foot forward finished with 29 points and 15 rebounds.

Dallas guard Steve Nash, who was nicknamed "Kid Canada" while growing up in Toronto, torched his hometown team with 27 points and eight assists. Michael Finley, who had been averaging 32.5 points per game in his last four, scored 20.

In the opener of a five-game road trip, the Mavericks snapped a two-game losing streak and won for the first time under interim coach Donn Nelson.

Nelson is 1-1 since taking over for his father, Don, who had prostate cancer surgery Thursday and will not rejoin the team for at least one month.

Carter scored 12 of his 33 points in the fourth quarter for the Raptors. He had a strong first half but disappeared in the second half until the final five minutes.

Dallas held its largest lead at 102-86 with five minutes to go before Toronto went on a 13-2 run, led by Carter's nine points, to close to 104-99 with 1:26 to go.

Nash answered with a layup and, after Carter made a jump shot, Hubert Davis sank a 3-pointer to give Dallas a 109-101 lead with 44 seconds left.
