Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- Tracy McGrady, one of the NBA's emerging young superstars, has had trouble finishing up strongly of late.

McGrady scored 30 points -- 19 in the first quarter -- but missed a potential winning jumper at the buzzer as the Orlando Magic suffered their third straight loss, 83-82 to the Atlanta Hawks.

The 21-year-old McGrady, who has become Orlando's go-to guy in the absence of injured superstar Grant Hill, poured in 36 points on Thursday at New York. But he was ineffective down the stretch, misfiring on a potential tying layup with 3.2 seconds left in a crushing 95-92 overtime loss.

On Saturday, the Magic appeared to be out of it when Matt Maloney buried a 3-pointer with 50 seconds left to give the resurgent Hawks an 83-79 lead.

"On that play, Jason (Terry) did a great job drawing the defense and it was a terrific pass from him," Maloney said.

But rookie Mike Miller hit a 3-pointer on Orlando's ensuing trip and Michael Doleac grabbed the rebound of Dion Glover's miss with 10 seconds left to set up the Magic for one final possession.

Dribbling against Glover at the top of the arc, McGrady temporarily shook his defender before rising for an 18-footer that was on target but significantly short, scraping the front of the rim as the buzzer sounded.

"It's a tough loss, definitely," McGrady said. "I definitely want to become a great player in this league and to do that, I have to try to excel in situations like that. I'm not always going to come through on those type of plays, I guess. But I will try to take the opportunity to win for my team."

"He's a great player," said Glover. "That's a shot he felt comfortable taking -- shooting over a smaller player like myself. He tried that, but I tipped and I got away with one."

After hitting 7-of-11 shots in the first 12 minutes, McGrady was a dismal 2-of-12 from the floor. The Magic have lost five of their last seven games.

Lorenzen Wright had 22 points and 12 rebounds and Terry added 21 points for the Hawks, who are 8-5 since a 4-16 start.

"Obviously, I feel great for the guys," Atlanta coach Lon Kruger said. "It was a battle all night long. The Magic created a little bit of a margin early. And then it was back and forth, just a big-time battle all night long. I'm really happy our guys hung in there."

Orlando had won the previous two meetings with Atlanta this season, both without McGrady.

Andrew DeClercq scored 15 points on 7-of-9 shooting and Pat Garrity added 12 points for the Magic, who shot just 36 percent (31-of-86) and slipped to 5-12 on the road.

"A terrible game, really," Orlando coach Doc Rivers said. "I thought we executed as poorly as we can. That's something we've got to work on because that's unacceptable. It's one thing to miss shots, and that's fine because that happens. But it's another thing to make mistakes. I can't figure out why. I can just tell you what it was."

Normally steady Orlando point guard Darrell Armstrong struggled all night, going 3-of-13 from the floor, including 1-of-6 from 3-point range.

"We realize that we didn't execute tonight," Armstrong said. "It just wasn't there. We played hard, but the execution wasn't there. I have to stop thinking about what I want to do and just shoot the basketball."

Dikembe Mutombo grabbed 24 rebounds and Alan Henderson, who missed the previous eight games with a sprained left shoulder, had 10 points off the bench for the Hawks. Atlanta shot 43 percent (32-of-75) and held a 48-47 rebounding edge.

McGrady supplied two-thirds of Orlando's offense in the first quarter and the Magic held a 29-20 lead entering the second period. But the Hawks came storming back with an 11-2 run, forging a 31-31 tie on Wright's free throw with 6:41 left in the first half.

After going scoreless in the second quarter, McGrady had six points in the third, helping Orlando to a 67-64 lead entering the final period.

Glover's jumper with 1:48 to play gave Atlanta an 80-74 lead before Armstrong finally began to heat up, hitting a 3-pointer and a layup to set up the exciting finish.
