Game Story

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Dirk Nowitzki is making life easier for troublemaking Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban and interim coach Donn Nelson.

Cuban and Nelson watched as the German wunderkind poured in 28 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and fueled a decisive run spanning the second and third quarters as the Mavericks cruised to a 103-85 victory over the Washington Wizards.

Cuban has become a marked man, drawing several fines from the league, including one for $250,000 earlier this week for his constant criticism of officials. Nelson, coaching his third game while father Don recovers from prostate cancer surgery, joined his boss in watching Nowitzki take over.

With the Mavericks trailing 47-45 late in the first half, the 7-foot, third-year forward scored four points during a closing 9-2 burst as Dallas took a 54-49 lead into the break.

"I was kind of floating around, not really being aggressive," Nowitzki said of going scoreless in the first 12 minutes. "I decided I had to get involved a little more in the second quarter and was feeling my rhythm a little more."

Intermission did nothing to cool off Dallas' leading scorer and rebounder. Nowitzki opened the second half by drilling a 26-footer. He made a layup and two free throws to cap the 16-4 burst, giving the Mavs a 61-51 lead with 9:49 left in the third quarter.

"In the third quarter, we wanted to put it away now," Nowitzki said.

He was 9-of-16 from the field, 7-of-8 at the line and made half of his six 3-point attempts as Dallas improved to 2-1 under Nelson and 2-0 since Cuban was slapped with his latest fine.

"You know he's going to be there scoring. He had some very important rebounds," Dallas point guard Steve Nash said of Nowitzki.

Nowitzki got Nelson his first win on Friday, scoring 25 points in the final 18 minutes of a 115-105 victory at Toronto.

Michael Finley added 25 points for the Mavs, who have won five straight road games.

"We focus a little more on the road," Donn Nelson said. "Our camaraderie is on another level and players get to hang out together and we seem to execute a little better."

Juwan Howard, Felipe Lopez and Richard Hamilton had 16 points apiece for the Wizards, who slipped to 4-12 at the MCI Center.

"I just thought we missed some shots that we normally make," Howard said. "It is not like we didn't come out and bring effort, intensity or weren't ready for them. They played better than us."

Nash had 14 points and 13 assists and Shawn Bradley also scored 14 points off the bench for the Mavs, who shot 50 percent (36-of-72) and overcame 20 turnovers. Dallas entered the contest averaging 14 giveaways.

Chris Whitney scored 11 points for the Wizards, who shot 36 percent (34-of-95) and held a 44-42 rebounding edge. Washington yielded just 11 points off turnovers.

The Wizards made another push in the third quarter but again were thwarted by Nowitzki. Obinna Ekezie, Lopez and Howard made layups before Howard fed Lopez for an acrobatic scoop to the basket as Washington closed to 61-59 with 6:44 remaining in the period.

Bradley and Lopez exchanged baskets on successive trips before Howard Eisley hit a jumper, Nash a technical free throw, Finley a four-footer and Nowitzki drilled a 26-footer to make it 73-63 with 1:54 left in the third quarter. Finley and Nash each made a free throw to cap the 14-4 run.

The Wizards did not seriously challenge in the fourth quarter.
