Game Story

TORONTO (Ticker) -- Cuttino Mobley scored 27 points, Steve Francis added 24 and Walt Williams sparked a pivotal second-quarter run as the Houston Rockets posted a 110-91 triumph over the Toronto Raptors.

Shandon Anderson added 17 points for the Rockets, who got back to the .500 mark with their fourth win in six games. Houston relied on strong shooting, making 53 percent (43-of-81) of its field goals, including 13-of-20 from 3-point range.

"We've been having a hard time shooting, but tonight we clicked," Rockets coach Rudy Tomjanovich said. "We had good energy and we boxed out."

"It was a good team effort for us," Francis said. "We came out passing the ball well. We normally shoot a good percentage from the 3-point line. We just stuck to our game plan."

The Rockets were outrebounded, 46-34, but committed only eight turnovers. Houston was without 37-year-old center Hakeem Olajuwon, who was placed on the injured list with a swollen right knee.

Olajuwon, who missed the previous four games with the injury, was averaging 10.2 points and 6.4 rebounds in 29 games.

Toronto stayed close for 18 minutes but struggled in the closing moments of the first half. Superstar Vince Carter, who left Sunday's win over Seattle with a right calf contusion, returned for the Raptors but shot 9-of-22 from the field and committed three turnovers.

"It's a loss and we'll put it behind us," Carter said. "We have a good team here but we're not playing our best basketball. We have unity, we don't point fingers. We have to keep our heads up and play hard."

"We tried to make Carter shoot over us and we closed the seams on him," Tomjanovich added.

The Rockets extended their lead in the all-time series to 7-3.

Houston took a 24-22 lead after 12 minutes and opened the second quarter with six straight points. The Raptors got within 38-34 following a basket by Corliss Williamson with 6:43 left in the second quarter but Williams' basket 39 seconds later sparked a 20-6 run that closed out the first half.

Mobley had six points during the burst and Williams added five. Moochie Norris capped the run with a free throw less than a minute before intermission.

The Rockets made 14-of-23 shots (61 percent) in the second quarter and held a 23-21 rebounding edge through 24 minutes.

"We got off to a good start but Mobley and Francis really got things going and they were tough to stop," Raptors rookie forward Morris Peterson said.

Toronto made just 35 percent (16-of-45) of its shots in the opening half.

"They shot the ball extremely well," Raptors coach Lenny Wilkens said. "It's like we were in second gear the whole time. We have to play with more confidence. If we are committed to playing hard every night, we will be fine."

The Raptors got within 71-59 with 4:22 left in the third quarter but Francis had a free throw and a nine-footer in the final minute to give Houston an 81-64 lead.

The lead was 84-64 24 seconds into the fourth quarter following a 3-pointer by Francis and grew to 28 down the stretch.

Carter finished with 24 points and Peterson added 15 for the Raptors. Kevin Willis had 14 points and 13 rebounds but Toronto's starting five shot just 24-of-61.

"We played well and our shots just fell," Mobley said. "We were aggressive and stayed aggressive. Our game plan was to make Vince Carter shoot tough shots."
