Game Story

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- The matchup between Vince Carter and Jerry Stackhouse proved no contest as the Toronto Raptors rolled to a 110-85 blowout of the Detroit Pistons.

Charles Oakley scored 19 points and Carter added 18 as Toronto won for only the second time in six tries.

The Raptors opened the second half with a 17-5 blitz as rookie Morris Peterson's basket opened a 79-43 lead with 6:53 left in the third quarter. The Michigan State product had six points during the surge.

"It's always special to play in front of friends and family. And to be able to play well, that's one thing I wanted to do," Peterson said. "I'm just glad we got the win. We're one game under .500 and just look forward to getting back on track."

Carter threw down some emphatic dunks before leaving with 6:12 to play, two minutes after Stackhouse went to the bench with 19 points on 4-of-19 shooting. He made 13-of-14 free throws.

"Just going in and playing to win, that's it," Carter said. "We had an embarrassing showing the night before, so we wanted to play better. I'm not saying we wanted to come and try and get a blowout, our goal was to win. If we win by one or 20, it doesn't matter."

"This was embarrassing," said Stackhouse, who was held under 30 points for the third time in 11 games. "Our fans were booing us and we deserved it. We got great looks at the basket all night and nothing would fall. It's discouraging when you keep taking shots that you make night after night and none of them would go down. We're not the type of team that can get down 20 points and just say we're gonna turn it back on and get back into the game. We don't have that ability."

Toronto scored 12 of the game's first 14 points and had a 33-16 lead at the end of the opening period. The Raptors built it to 62-38 at halftime.

Peterson finished with 18 points for Toronto, which shot 55 percent (44-of-79) from the field, topping the 50 percent mark for only the third time this season. The Raptors surrendered 19 points off 17 turnovers.

Joe Smith added 12 points and rookie Mateen Cleaves -- Peterson's former college teammate -- chipped in 11 for the Pistons, who have lost three straight. Detroit shot just 32 percent (29-of-89) and fell to 0-4 when allowing an opponent to make better than half its shots.

Detroit was only 3-of-16 from behind the arc, while Toronto went 7-of-17.

"It's really hard to explain," Smith said. "They made some early baskets and got us down and we never hit anything. When you're shooting like that, it's almost impossible to make the kind of run that we're going to need to get back in this. We need a win bad and the next couple of games aren't going to be that easy. We have to find some way to bear down and fix this before it really gets ugly."
