Game Story

MINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Kevin Garnett came within one assist of a triple-double as the Minnesota Timberwolves rebounded from one of their worst defeats of the season with a 95-89 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers.

Garnett scored 17 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and dished out nine assists. Terrell Brandon also scored 17 points while Wally Szczerbiak added 16, including 12 in the first half, as the Timberwolves bounced back from Wednesday's 106-86 home loss to Dallas.

"We knew we had to get it done tonight," Garnett said. "We got ourselves going and got the crowd into it."

Minnesota took the lead for good at 76-75 on Chauncey Billups' 3-pointer with 8:52 to play. The basket ignited a 7-0 run that included layups by LaPhonso Ellis and Reggie Slater.

"Slater's put himself in a situation where I'm trying to find ways to play him, and right now we've been a team that's more effective with him on the floor," Minnesota coach Flip Saunders said. "We have to find ways to have those guys (Slater and Ellis) included and get those guys more minutes."

Rookie Darius Miles made two free throws with 2:41 left to pull Los Angeles within 84-82. But Billups nailed his third 3-pointer of the period and Garnett converted a three-point play around a layup by Clippers forward Lamar Odom to give the Timberwolves a 90-84 advantage with 83 seconds remaining.

"Shots haven't been falling for me lately," Billups said. "I am just working hard on my shooting. Tonight I wanted to be aggresive and it paid off."

Odom led Los Angeles with 21 points and Michael Olowokandi scored 14, all in the first half. Olowokandi and Miles each grabbed eight rebounds for the Clippers, who missed 12-of-13 3-point attempts.

Los Angeles extended a 44-40 halftime advantage by starting the third quarter with a 12-5 spurt, capped by four straight points by Odom.

Los Angeles led 59-51 when Odom picked up his fourth foul with 4:42 left in the period. The Timberwolves went on a 19-5 run, sparked by 12 points by Anthony Peeler, and took a 70-69 lead into the fourth quarter.

"We're starting to learn how to stay in games and how to finish games," Odom said. "Being in these games is a learning experience."

"You've got to give them credit," added Los Angeles coach Alvin Gentry. "I thought AP (Peeler) kind of changed the whole game. He made some tough shots ... they made some tough shots."

Minnesota improved to 2-1 against Los Angeles this season and has won 14 of the last 18 meetings, including eight of 10 at home. The Clippers posted a 103-96 win on December 20 in their first nationally televised game in three years.

"Since the first time we've played against each other, I really look forward to playing against him," Odom said of Garnett. "The game on TNT was a great one. One day, I'd love to be on the same team as KG."

Peeler finished with 14 points while Billups had 13 off the bench. The Wolves had 28 assists against only 12 turnovers.

"I thought our bench helped us," Saunders said. "Maybe the points were similar, but I thought the contributions to the flow of the game and the importance of what they did was really big."
