Game Story

SEATTLE (Ticker) -- Ruben Patterson scored 26 points to lead the Seattle SuperSonics to their 10th straight home win over the Vancouver Grizzlies, 115-102.

Rookie Desmond Mason made consecutive baskets to give Seattle a 94-84 lead with 9:40 left in the fourth quarter. Michael Dickerson converted a three-point play 20 seconds later for Vancouver, but Mason drilled a 20-footer and Vin Baker made a basket and 1-of-2 free throws to build the lead back to 12 points.

"Poor defense," Vancouver coach Sidney Lowe said. "They were very aggressive defensively and we just couldn't guard down on the post. Our defense is nothing like it needs to be. It's nothing like it was before and I don't know why. I don't know where it went."

The Grizzlies got back within 103-97 after Shareef Abdur-Rahim made two free throws and Bryant Reeves knocked down back-to-back jumpers. But Baker and Gary Payton scored the game's next six points to make it 108-97 with just over three minutes to play.

Payton had 21 points and 10 assists and Mason finished with 16 points for the Sonics, who have won three in a row overall. Four starters scored in double figures for Seattle.

"If you work hard, good things will happen," Mason said, "We had guys contributing, from the starting five to guys coming off the bench."

The Sonics' reserves outscored Vancouver's bench, 40-6.

Reeves scored 31 points on 13-of-18 shooting and Mike Bibby added 21 and 18 assists for Vancouver, which shot 46 percent (42-of-91) from the field. The Grizzlies have lost 14 of their last 17 games.

"It's very discouraging," Reeves said. "We had the ballgame within five right there at the end of the third. We just weren't able to take advantage of the advantages we had."

Neither team led by more than two points until the Grizzlies closed the first quarter with a 9-2 burst. Damon Jones nailed a 3-pointer to start the run and Reeves capped it with a layup as Vancouver took a 32-27 lead.

The second quarter belonged to Seattle, which opened the period with a 7-0 run. The Sonics ran off eight straight points later in the quarter, opening a 46-39 lead on a free throw by Payton with 4:24 to go before halftime.

A layup by Reeves halted the spurt, but Seattle responded with the next eight points. Payton hit a 16-footer and a 3-pointer, followed by a dunk by Jelani McCoy and a a free throw by Baker that stretched the advantage to 54-41 with 2:19 to go.

The Sonics settled for a 60-48 cushion at the break.

Rashard Lewis had 14 points and Patrick Ewing added 12 and seven rebounds for Seattle, which shot nearly 56 percent (45-of-81) and had a 42-39 rebounding edge.

Dickerson had 21 points and Abdur-Rahim 15 and 12 rebounds for the Grizzlies, who have lost seven straight road games.
