Game Story

MIAMI (Ticker) -- A pair of 3-pointers salvaged an otherwise dismal night for Miami Heat point guard Tim Hardaway.

Hardaway scored a season-low six points but drilled the go-ahead 3-pointer midway through the fourth quarter as the Heat rallied for their seventh straight home win, 90-81 over the lowly Chicago Bulls.

A lackluster third quarter had Miami trailing, 68-63. The Heat still were down by three points before Brian Grant hit a jumper from the right corner and Hardaway nailed a 3-pointer from the right sideline with 7:28 remaining.

Eddie Jones followed with two free throws and a basket and Hardaway again connected from beyond the arc to cap the 12-0 burst and extend the Heat's lead to 83-74 with 5:35 to play.

Chicago got no closer than seven points the rest of the way and suffered its fourth straight loss.

"Coach called my play and I made the shots," said Hardaway. "Earlier in the game, we were making mistakes on offense and they were shooting the ball well. I'm just trying to be aggressive with the ball and help my teammates. I just try to get easy shots for my teammates."

While he was 2-of-6 from the field, Hardaway dished out nine assists in 35 minutes.

"I sort of like his line tonight -- going 2-for-6 with nine assists then in the fourth quarter, looking for his shots," Heat coach Pat Riley said. "Tim is a tremendous asset to us when he is a distributor and a playmaker and using all of his energy to make plays for people. I think he had a good game for us tonight."

Jones scored 20 points and Grant and Anthony Mason added 19 apiece for Miami, which returned from an 0-2 road trip and improved to 15-4 against teams with losing records. Mason also pulled down 10 rebounds.

"We played our best basketball in the beginning and our best basketball at the end," Riley said. "In between, it was a contest between two very intense teams. Anthony Carter gave us a huge lift with his energy and Tim making two big shots for us in the fourth quarter, this was a very good ending for us."

Elton Brand led all scorers with 25 points for the Bulls, who managed only 13 points in the fourth quarter and suffered their fifth consecutive road loss.

"It's frustrating to be in that situation for the third straight game, when we've got a lead going into the fourth quarter," Chicago coach Tim Floyd said. "I think they picked up their defensive pressure and we had a hard time getting it into Elton Brand. ... Then we had some looks at the perimeter because we weren't getting the ball into Elton, and those just weren't going in."

Miami had a 41-40 halftime lead, but the Bulls shot 58 percent (11-of-19) from the field in the third quarter to surge in front. Brand had 10 points in the period and Ron Mercer scored four straight to cap a 6-0 spurt that gave Chicago a 68-61 lead in the final minute.

The Heat charged to an 11-2 lead in the opening four minutes as Mason had a pair of baskets and a blocked shot. But a 3-pointer by Bryce Drew capped a 12-2 run that gave the Bulls their first lead, 14-13, with 3:10 to go in the first quarter.

The period ended tied, 20-20, as Mason and Mercer each had nine points.

Mercer finished with 19 points and Brad Miller added 12 off the bench for Chicago, which shot under 46 percent (31-of-68) and was beaten on the boards, 38-34.

"It's very frustrating," Mercer said. "Right now, we can't finish a game. It's the same routine."

Bruce Bowen chipped in 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting for Miami, which connected on 44 percent (33-of-75) of its shots.

"It was a rough game," Grant said. "We missed a lot of little ones, but we got better. We need to play a little bit harder. The will is there, but the effort is not all positive."
