Game Story

TORONTO (Ticker) -- Vince Carter started strong and finished stronger, scoring 40 points to lead the Toronto Raptors to a 107-99 victory over the Central Division-leading Charlotte Hornets.

Carter had 17 points in the first quarter and 16 in the decisive third that put away the game.

The Raptors trailed 60-57 at halftime but outscored Charlotte, 37-19, in the third period, led by Carter and Charles Oakley, who netted seven points in the quarter.

Toronto made a season-best 14 shots from 3-point range and tied their season-high with 33 assists.

Mark Jackson had 13 points and 14 assists and Tracy Murray also scored 13 points for Toronto, which has won three in a row. Oakley finished with 12 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists.

"As a team we brought our `A' game tonight," Carter said. "But our main focus is to try to keep it going."

Murray and Keon Clark combined to score 22 points and grab six rebounds in their first game since being traded from Denver on Friday.

"They both really helped out and bring us scoring and athleticism," coach Lenny Wilkins said. "By adding Murray we have another player who can make the 3-point shot."

Murray sank 3-of-5 shots from 3-point range in the second half.

Jamal Mashburn scored 15 of his 21 points in the first half and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the Hornets. David Wesley added 20 points and Elden Campbell chipped in 15 points with nine rebounds.

The Hornets outscored Toronto, 36-20, in the paint, but the Raptors were lethal from behind the arc. They shot 67 percent (14-of-21) led by Carter (6-of-10) and Jackson (3-of-3).

"The threes were falling tonight and I didn't hesitate to let it go," Carter said.

The Hornets tied a franchise record by allowing 14 3-pointers. They had not done it since February 13, 1996 at Cleveland.

"They were making the threes and that was what did us in," coach Paul Silas said. "When those kind of shots go in, you're going to have a tough time winning."

Toronto built a 17-point lead in the fourth quarter, 97-80, after Alvin Williams drilled a 3-pointer from the right sideline with 6:26 to go, but Charlotte closed with a 19-10 run.

Baron Davis sank a 1-of-2 free throws with 40.8 seconds left to get the Hornets within 106-99. Oakley then made 1-of-2 from the line to end the scoring as Mashburn missed a final attempt with 20 seconds left.

The Hornets built a 50-40 lead on Mashburn's baseline jumper with 1:39 left in the second quarter. But the Raptors ended the half on a 7-0 run and close within three points at the break.

Jackson nailed a 3-pointer from the right corner, and Clark blocked Derrick Coleman's shot to start a fast break that resulted in a layup by Antonio Davis that made it 50-45 with 41.6 seconds to go.

After Baron Davis missed a long jump shot, Jackson capped the run with a short jumper with 12.1 seconds left. Mashburn missed a shot as time ran out in the half.

Charlotte had won the previous two meetings between the team by a combined 60 points.

"This was an important win because Charlotte had embarrased us twice this year," Jackson said.

The Raptors got back above .500 for the first time since December 28 and improved to 9-5 against Central Division foes this season.

The Hornets lead in the Central Division slipped to one-half game over Milwaulkee.
