Game Story

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- Bonzi Wells scored a season-high 28 points and pulled down a career-best 14 rebounds as the Portland Trail Blazers warpped up a successful five-game road trip with a 103-96 win over the Detroit Pistons.

Wells, who was traded to Portland after Detroit selected him with the 11th overall pick in the 1998 draft, eclipsed his previous best by four rebounds to help the Trail Blazers to a 43-40 edge on the glass.

"He played a great game, obviously," Portland coach Mike Dunleavy said of Wells. "He scored, he's a terrific finisher. He did a tremendous job on the boards for us. He really came in and got to the glass. We needed it."

"Thanks Detroit, we thank you all for giving him to us," added Blazers point guard Damon Stoudamire. "That could have been y'alls second scorer maybe. Bonzi played well, 28 points. It seems like every time we play against Detroit that he has something a little personal, I don't know."

Wells, however, said he does not treat the Pistons any differently than any other team.

"It's just how the schedule goes. We got it done, we had a good road trip," he added. "I'm supposed to (play well). It's for the team. I've got to come out here and run hard, that's my job. I ain't from here, I'm from Indiana so (it's) not really (special). It's just another game. We've got so many more games, you can't dwell on any one game. This game's over with. We've go to play Cleveland or somebody Tuesday."

The 6-5 Wells hit 7-of-8 shots and scored 15 points in the first two periods as Portland built a 59-49 lead it never relinquished. He ended up making 12-of-14 shots in 40 minutes, and the Blazers improved to 8-1 when he starts. Wells was one point shy of a career high, set in a 127-119 overtime loss at Indiana on March 9, 2000.

Steve Smith, the man who Wells replaced in the starting lineup, scored 21 points and Rasheed Wallace contributed 16 and nine boards as Portland wrapped up a 4-1 trip and won for the 11th time in 12 games. Stoudamire had 13 points and seven boards, combining with Wallace to make 4-of-4 3-pointers.

Jerry Stackhouse poured in 41 points to regain the NBA scoring lead, but the Pistons suffered their fifth straight loss. The 6-6 foward is averaging 29.8 points per game, just ahead of Kobe Bryant (29.6) of the Los Angeles Lakers. He had eight of his team's 23 turnovers that led to 27 points for Portland.

"It's the same thing every night," Stackhouse said. "We gave the ball away a little too much, but they weren't all turnovers. Some of them had to be fouls. Every time I came to the bench, they're trying to stop my bleeding. They say that the hand is part of the ball, but it's not usually my hand."

Stackhouse scored at least 40 points for the fourth time this season and first at home, but Detroit fell to 2-2 in those games. He made 13-of-18 shots, but the rest of the team hit just 22-of-65 (40 percent). Detroit's other starters totaled just 13 points.

"I hate this (stuff). I don't like the fact that it seems like I have to score 40 or 50 every night," Stackhouse said. "I see other teams that aren't any better than us who have their key player have a good game and they could still win. I'd like to see that here. If other guys are scoring, I'll pass the ball all night. But when their shots aren't going in, I feel a lot more pressure to do things myself and get us some points."

The Blazers took control with an 11-2 burst in the first quarter. Wells had four points, capping it with a layup for an 18-9 lead with 6:32 to go.

Portland's biggest lead was 56-39 after Wells hit a 3-pointer 2:55 before halftime.

The Blazers took a 76-66 advantage into the final period. The margin remained in double digits until a late run by the Pistons. Joe Smith, who had 18 points and seven boards off the bench, capped a 9-0 spurt with a follow shot to draw Detroit within 101-94 with 37 seconds to go.

Portland missed four straight shots from the floor before Stoudamire made 1-of-2 free throws for a 102-94 lead with 34 seconds left. Stackhouse made two foul shots seven seconds later and Smith was 1-of-2 with 25 seconds left for the final margin.
