Game Story

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- Ruben Patterson continued his hot streak, scoring 25 points to lead the Seattle SuperSonics to their fourth straight win, 106-87 over the Phoenix Suns.

The Sonics opened the game with a 14-0 run and held the lead for the full 48 minutes.

"We just came out aggressively in the first half," Patterson said. "They did a good job of coming back in the second half, but we just kept our heads."

Patterson is Seattle's leading scorer over the last five games, averaging 20.3 points.

"The guy is so capable of dominating a game, both offensively and defensively," Seattle coach Nate McMillan said. "He doesn't even know how good he can be."

The Suns started the third quarter on a 21-7 run and pulled within 66-61 on a 3-pointer by Clifford Robinson with 4:35 remaining. But Seattle responded by scoring 13 of the next 15 points and opening a 79-63 lead with 90 seconds left.

"We got it close, but that happens a lot when you come from such a deficit," Phoenix coach Scott Skiles said. "You expend so much energy and it finally got down to five, and it went from five to 12 in a matter of two minutes."

Lewis scored nine points during the run and finished with 20. Gary Payton added 22, nine rebounds and six assists, marking the first time this season that three Sonics have scored at least 20 points in the same game.

Robinson scored 33 points on 12-of-20 shooting and Shawn Marion added 16 for Phoenix. Jason Kidd had just one basket for the second straight game and finished with three points on 1-of-7 shooting but dished out nine assists. Tony Delk made 5-of-14 shots and had 11 points to lead the Phoenix bench.

Robinson got the Suns within 34-26 with a dunk at the 7:15 mark of the second quarter, but Seattle outscored Phoenix 25-14 the rest of the half and built their largest lead at 59-40 on a layup by Patterson right before halftime.

The Suns missed their first nine shots and scored just 10 points in the first quarter, their lowest total in any period since a 12-point effort in the opening quarter against New York on November 11, 1997.

The slow start prompted Skiles to bench Marion three minutes into the game.

"He wasn't running the floor and I didn't like the feel of the game early," Skiles said. "We were just walking in mud out there, so anybody is going to go to the bench early to find a combination that is going to play well."

Robinson nailed a jumper with 5:40 left in the first quarter to open the scoring for the Suns. Seattle outrebounded Phoenix, 25-11, and grabbed 14 offensive rebounds in the opening period.

"It was unbelievable," McMillan said. "The rebounds got us going. That set the tone offensively."

Seattle built its biggest lead, 106-85, on a short jumper by rookie Desmond Mason with 34.5 seconds left.

The Sonics grabbed 23 offensive rebounds for a 58-40 edge off the glass.

"I don't care what the other stats say, you'll never win an NBA game if you get dominated on the glass like that," Skiles said.

Patrick Ewing had seven points and seven rebounds in the first quarter and finished with 11 and 11 for the Sonics, who snapped a four-game losing streak in Phoenix.

The Suns had scored at least 97 points in 38 straight home meetings with the Seattle.
