Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- On a day when Stephon Marbury hit just 4-of-17 shots from the field, the New Jersey Nets leaned on Johnny Newman and Lucious Harris.

Newman scored 11 of his 19 points in a decisive run bridging the third and fourth quarters as the Nets won at Philips Arena for the second time this season, posting an 84-78 victory over the Atlanta Hawks.

After losing 12 straight games in Atlanta, the Nets snapped the streak with an 89-83 victory here on December 16.

On Monday, Newman and Harris combined for 20 points in a 22-5 run that turned an eight-point deficit into a nine-point lead for New Jersey with 9:41 left.

"I've been doing this for 15 years and I never had a doubt about making shots," Newman said. "It was a good feeling tonight. We played hard."

Meanwhile, Atlanta scored just 32 points in the second half. The Hawks missed their first eight shots from the field in the fourth quarter, recording their first basket on a 3-pointer by Jason Terry with 3:23 left.

"The big part of the game was when we had at least five stops in a row in the fourth quarter," Nets coach Byron Scott said.

Terry led the Hawks with 32 points. But his teammates hit just 36 percent (18-of-50) from the field.

"We were just sleepwalking and I don't know why," Terry said. They picked it up defensively. They were just real aggressive and you got to give them credit."

Dikembe Mutombo was the only other Atlanta player in double figures with 11 points. He also grabbed 22 rebounds and blocked five shots.

The Hawks also committed 22 turnovers which led to 30 points for New Jersey.

Keith Van Horn led the Nets with 24 points and nine rebounds. Despite the dreadful shooting night, Marbury finished with 14 points.

But it was Newman and Harris who turned the tide in this game.

Two dunks by Mutombo and a short jumper by Alan Henderson helped the Hawks open a 56-48 lead with 4:58 left in the third quarter.

Harris hit a jumper and scored on a tip-in to ignite the run. After a free throw by Mutombo and a basket by Terry, the Nets scored the next eight points to take the lead. Newman hit an 18-footer, Harris connected on a 3-pointer from the left side and Newman followed with a 3-pointer from the right side, giving New Jersey a 60-59 lead.

After Terry converted an 18-footer, Kenyon Martin scored on a tip-in for New Jersey to close the quarter.

The Nets scored the first eight points of the fourth quarter, opening their lead TO 70-61. Newman capped it with a three-point play with 9:41 left.

"Johnny had a great game," Scott said. "He really came in and did a great job giving us some added punch."

The Nets led by as many as 11 points on two occasions, the latest at 80-69 on a 3-pointer by Van Horn with 3:04 left.

A jumper by Roshown McLeod, and two free throws apiece by Terry and Mutombo pulled the Hawks within 80-75 with 1:03 left. After Newman converted a pair of free throws, Atlanta's Matt Maloney missed a 3-pointer and Marbury hit two free throws with 20 seconds remaining to give the Nets an 84-75 lead. Terry hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer.

"Obviously, we were disappointed with the result," Nets coach Lon Kruger said. "New Jersey made a run in the third quarter. They did well and they made some plays. We obviously didn't take good care of the basketball and that led to points."
