Game Story

DENVER (Ticker) -- Nick Van Exel had 27 points and 11 assists to lead the Denver Nuggets to a 122-111 win over the Seattle SuperSonics, who had a four-game winning streak snapped.

Seattle never led but got within 93-90 after Vin Baker tipped in Ruben Patterson's miss with 9:06 to go. Denver put away the game with a 25-10 run over the next eight minutes, capped by Voshon Lenard's 3-pointer with 1:38 to go.

Van Exel scored 13 points during the decisive run, including two 3-pointers and a conventional three-point play.

Denver turned in its best offensive performance of the season with 122 points and .561 field goal percentage, both season-highs.

"Tonight guys were just feeling it, we were hitting the outside shots so well," Van Exel said.

The Nuggets were lethal from behind the arc, shooting 59 percent (16-of-27) as Lenard made 6-of-9 3-pointers. Denver's 16 3-pointers was an NBA season-high and tied a franchise record. That record was also set against the Sonics on March 20, 1997.

"That was unbelievable shooting by Denver," Seattle coach Nate McMillan said. "It seemed like they hit everything."

Lenard poured in a season-high 30 points to lead all scorers. Antonio McDyess added 16, but had his streak of 11 straight double-doubles snapped.

"McDyess has been playing so great that teams come in with the intent to stop him as their top priority," Issel said. "We have gotten better perimeter looks because of that. I think it's a positive that we don't rely on McDyess so much."

James Posey contributed 14 off the bench and Raef LaFrentz had seven blocked shots. Kevin Willis chipped in with eight points and seven rebounds off the bench in his debut with Denver, who improved to 16-5 at home.

"He played like I wanted him to play," Issel said. "When the game got physical he stood his ground. I told him that is why we picked him up."

"Kevin Willis definitely adds soemthing to this team, he's a perfect compliment," McMillan said. "He understands the dirtyness you need to play in the paint."

Gary Payton had 28 points, 11 assists and five rebounds for the Sonics, who finished up a 2-1 road trip. Rashard Lewis netted 22 points and Emanual Davis scored 15 on 5-of-6 shooting from 3-point range.

The Sonics got back in the game with an 18-5 run in the third quarter, capped off by a Payton jumper with 36.9 seconds left to cut the Denver lead to 87-83.

Seattle trailed by as many as 25 in the second quarter but were able to get within 17, 65-48, at halftime.

The Nuggets built their double-digit lead early with a 14-0 run at the end of the first quarter. Lenard drained two from 3-point range during the run and Van Exel scored his fifth first quarter point on a layup to give Denver a 37-19 lead with 28 seconds left.

Denver has won five straight at the Pepsi Center and 12 of its last 15 games to post its best record after 38 games since the 1989-90 season.
