Game Story

HOUSTON (Ticker) -- Cuttino Mobley scored 26 points and Maurice Taylor added a season-high 24 as the Houston Rockets snapped the Toronto Raptors' three-game winning streak with a 114-99 victory.

"We needed that one," Mobley said. "Personally, I think we played sub-par against Utah (on Monday). We said we had to play aggressive and that's what we did."

"We pretty much took control of the game from the beginning," Taylor added. "I think a lot of it had to do with the type of game last night. We just came out and tried to play aggressively. I was in a rhythm today and they kept feeding me the ball."

The Rockets thumped Toronto for the second time in eight days after a 110-91 triumph on January 9 that featured a season-high 14 3-pointers.

Apparently, the Raptors did not learn their lesson as the Rockets made 10-of-18 3-pointers on Tuesday night, led by Walt Williams' four off the bench.

"The Rockets beat us before, embarrassingly, and we didn't come out and meet the challenge," Toronto forward Charles Oakley said. "Houston broke us down and Mo Taylor really got them going. They were quicker to the ball than we were."

Mobley made 9-of-16 shots and Taylor 10-of-13 as the Rockets used 53 percent (41-of-77) shooting in falling one point shy of their season-high. Houston rolled to a 115-93 victory over Milwaukee on November 2.

"I like the fact that we haven't had any bad eforts here at home in a long time," Houston coach Rudy Tomjanovich said. "Hopefully, we can get a nice little thing going."

Moochie Norris was effective off the bench with 10 points and eight assists in just 19 minutes. Williams added 13 points as Houston won despite getting just 12 points on 3-of-7 shooting by Steve Francis.

The Rockets led 19-15 with 3:14 left in the first quarter before closing the period with an 11-7 run. Williams scored six points and Mobley had five during the run.

"They have a great backcourt," Toronto coach Lenny Wilkens said. "Both Francis and Mobley are terrific players and they can get to the basket."

The second quarter was highlighted by Mobley's desperation 3-pointer that beat the shot clock to open the scoring. The Rockets maintained their advantage throughout the period and led 54-43 at intermission.

Taylor's three-point play to open the third quarter ignited a personal 7-0 run and the lead never dipped below 13 points the rest of the way.

Williams capped another 7-0 run with a 3-pointer with just under five minutes left in the final period to give Houston its largest advantage at 110-84.

Vince Carter led Toronto with 22 points on 9-of-21 shooting. Oakley scored 16 points and rookie Morris Peterson added 12 as the Raptors lost despite a season-low three turnovers. They shot 45 percent (39-of-86) from the field.

"We lost and now we need to get ready for the next game," Carter said. "We didn't hit our shots and Houston hit theirs, including a number of buzzer-beaters. They were in a groove and we weren't."

Antonio Davis had eight points and nine rebounds while Corliss Williamson scored 11 points in just 12 minutes. Toronto made only 2-of-10 3-point attempts.

Houston improved to 5-1 all-time against Toronto at the Compaq Center.
