Game Story

MIAMI (Ticker) -- Anthony Mason scored 23 points and grabbed 18 rebounds and received plenty of help from his teammates. Again, Jerry Stackhouse received little help from his.

Eddie Jones and Anthony Carter led a decisive fourth-quarter run and Dan Majerle hit three key 3-pointers to lead the Miami Heat to a 93-85 victory over the Detroit Pistons.

Jones and Carter combined for eight points and Majerle drilled a 3-pointer in a 15-4 spurt that gave Miami a 90-77 lead.

The loss was the sixth in a row for the Pistons.

Stackhouse scored 28 points, topping the team for the 20th straight game. The NBA scoring leader at 29.8 points per game, Stackhouse admitted he has been frustrated with the pressure of carrying the team. On Tuesday, he was 11-of-30 from the field.

Joe Smith and Jud Buechler each added 12 points for the Pistons.

"It is a very difficult stretch for us," Smith said. "We will keep plugging away and working hard and good things will happen for us."

Led by Mason, the Heat outrebounded the Pistons, 51-41.

"Anthony was the one constant throughout the course of the game," Miami coach Pat Riley said. "He had a great first half and rebounded well tonight."

"Mason's a bull, there's no doubt about that," Pistons coach George Irvine added. "He camps into the lane the whole game and it's hard to get him out of there. It's not surprising that certain guys end up grabbing 22, 20 or 18 rebounds against us when they just sit in the lane."

Miami point guard Tim Hardaway left early in the second half with a stiff back and finished with nine points in 20 minutes.

"My back was stiff all night," he said. "I tried to get it loose, but I couldn't. There was no way I could return, and sitting on the bench made it stiffer."

Carter played most of the way at point guard and finished with 12 points.

"In the second half, I said to to myself I didn't work all summer long for nothing," Carter said. "I came out aggressive in the second half and the shots started falling."

Brian Grant had 14 points for Miami and Jones added 11 but hit just 2-of-11 shots, both dunks.

"Both Majerle and Mason were outstanding for us," Grant said. "Overall, it was a good game for us."

Mason scored nine points in the first quarter when Miami built a 28-20 lead. A.C. Green hit a corner jumper, a pair of free throws and a layup in the first two minutes of the second period to stretch the advantage to 34-20. He finished with 11 points.

A basket by Mason gave Miami its biggest lead of the half, 51-35 with 1:56 left.

Detroit scored the last six points of the quarter on a short jumper by Stackhouse, a dunk by Ben Wallace and a layup by Buechler.

The Pistons kept the momentum, scoring the first seven points of the second half to complete a 13-0 run as rookie Mateen Cleaves made a basket, Stackhouse completed a three-point play and Smith hit a jumper, pulling them within 51-48.

Buechler converted a pair of free throws to give Detroit its first lead of the second half, 57-55, with 6:37 left in the third quarter.

A 3-pointer by Majerle and a jumper by Carter in the final minute of the quarter gave Miami a 70-67 lead. Detroit got within 75-73 on a basket by Buechler with 6:11 remaining before Miami went on its decisive run.

After Jones made a pair of free throws, Stackhouse hit 1-of-2 from the line. But Carter hit a 19-footer from the right sideline, Majerle nailed a 3-pointer and Jones dunked to open an 84-74 lead with 3:33 left.

"I just got some good looks and was fortunate to hit them," Majerle said of his long-range shooting.

"Majerle hit some big 3-pointers down the stretch and we lost it in the fourth quarter," Buechler added.

A basket by Mason and a layup by Carter with under two minutes left capped the 15-4 run.
