Game Story

PORTLAND, Oregon (Ticker) -- Bonzi Wells scored 22 points, leading the Portland Trail Blazers to their ninth straight home win, 103-83 over the road-weary Cleveland Cavaliers.

Steve Smith added 19 points off the bench and Rasheed Wallace contributed 18 as the Trail Blazers used 52 percent shooting (39-of-75) to win for the 12th time in their last 13 games.

"I thought it was a good win for us coming off the road trip," Portland coach Mike Dunleavy said. "It was a very good job defensively in the second half for us. These are important games facing us this week. We have three games at home and it is important that we get those games because then we go back on the road for another East Coast road trip."

Two free throws by Andre Miller with just over three minutes left in the third quarter pulled Cleveland within 72-67. But Portland got the six points of the period, including four by Arvydas Sabonis, to take a 78-67 lead.

Portland opened the fourth quarter with an 8-4 spurt, extending their advantage to 86-71. A jumper by Cleveland's Cedric Henderson cut the deficit to 13 points with 5:41 to play, but Smith's 3-pointer two minutes later capped a personal 7-0 run that made it 93-73 and effectively ended the Cavaliers' hopes.

"We played well during the second half," Wells said. "We knew coming in that they were a good, solid team, but they surprised us a bit in the first half and we took care of them in the second half."

Clarence Weatherspoon scored 17 points to lead Cleveland, which fell to 1-4 on a six-game road trip. Miller had 14 points and 10 assists while Murray added 13 points.

"We struggled offensively in the second half," Cleveland coach Randy Wittman said. "We were down seven at the nine-minute mark in the second half and they hit a couple of threes and busted it open."

Former Blazer Jim Jackson and Chris Gatling each scored 12 points as Cleveland used strong free-throw shooting (19-of-21) to stay in the game early. Jackson led the Cavaliers with eight rebounds.

"They come at you in waves," Jackson said. "The first group scores, the second group is more defensive-minded. They're playing the best ball in the league right now."

The Cavaliers, who shot 41 percent (31-of-76), have just two wins in their last 11 road games. They conclude their trip on Friday at Denver.

"I think we just have to stay together and fight the road," Gatling said. "We're struggling with different aspects of the game. There is no easy battle being on the road, and that shows with us."

The Blazers have not lost at the Rose Garden since a 107-94 setback to league-leading Philadelphia on December 8. Portland owns the best record in the Western Conference and improved to 19-4 against teams from the East.
