Game Story

DENVER (Ticker) -- The Denver Nuggets made sure the Vancouver Grizzlies could not blame this one on the officials.

Nick Van Exel powered a balanced attack with 21 points as the surging Nuggets never trailed, raced to a 21-point lead after one quarter and cruised to a 121-97 victory over the Grizzlies, their third straight win.

The Grizzlies were coming off a disheartening 113-112 overtime road setback to the Los Angeles Lakers on Monday in which they lost on Shaquille O'Neal's follow shot that replays showed came clearly after the buzzer. Following the game, Grizzlies star forward Shareef Abdur-Rahim called the referees "three cowards."

However, it was Vancouver which played scared in this game. The Grizzlies fell behind 10-0 in the first two-plus minutes and 35-14 after one quarter. They never recovered and lost for the 10th time in 13 games.

"We didn't come out ready to play or compete and it showed the whole night," Abdur-Rahim said. "They whooped us good. We laid down and weren't ready to go to work today. We don't show the guts we need to show on a consistent basis."

"We got our butts kicked," Grizzlies coach Sidney Lowe said. "At shootaround, we came out with no focus and I told our guys if we missed some some they'd go up by 10 and they went up by 12."

Van Exel led seven players in double figures. Antonio McDyess added 20 points and 20 rebounds for Denver, which substituted liberally as no one played more than 30 minutes.

"This game reminded me of the old Nuggets, when the games were decided early and we took the starters out before the fourth quarter," Nuggets coach Dan Issel said. "They got some much-needed rest."

The Nuggets have won six straight at home and six in a row from the Grizzlies. They are eighth in the Western Conference.

"We feel good about ourselves," said McDyess, whose streak of 11 double-double games was snapped Monday. "If you asked me where I thought we'd be in the standings now before the season, it's surprising. ... When we step on the court, we feel unbeatable."

In the first quarter, the Nuggets certainly looked unbeatable. Voshon Lenard and James Posey made layups around 3-pointers by Van Exel and Raef LaFrentz for a 10-0 lead just 2:09 into the contest.

A jumper by Lenard made it 16-6 with 7:05 left and Denver led by at least 10 points thereafter. The basket triggered a 14-4 run featuring eight points by LaFrentz.

A 3-pointer by George McCloud made it 33-12 in the final minute of the period. Denver shot 50 percent (13-of-26) from the field and held Vancouver to 19 percent (5-of-26).

"I think we played a perfect first quarter," Issel said. "As far as the 3-point shooting, teams are doubling McDyess and he is doing a good job finding the open man from the block."

The Nuggets led 65-44 at halftime and 89-71 after three periods. Their largest lead was 28 points.

LaFrentz scored 13 points, Posey and McCloud added 12 apiece and Lenard and Mark Strickland each had 10 for Denver, which shot 46 percent (41-of-89) and held a 52-44 rebounding edge. Robert Pack had 12 assists.

Abdur-Rahim scored 24 points and Michael Dickerson added 18 for the Grizzlies, who shot below 40 percent (37-of-93). Mike Bibby handed out 12 assists.
