Game Story

SAN ANTONIO (Ticker) -- Mark Jackson had a nearly flawless night with 23 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds as the Toronto Raptors won for the fourth time in five games with a 98-91 victory over the San Antonio Spurs.

Jackson made 8-of-10 shots, 4-of-4 free throws and committed only one turnover. He scored six points when Toronto opened the fourth quarter with a 16-5 spurt to take control.

"Mark was outstanding," Toronto coach Lenny Wilkins said. "He took control of the game for us, especially in the fourth quarter, and that's good because we need someone other than Vince (Carter). Vince draws a crowd."

Carter scored 27 points and rookie Morris Peterson added 15 for Toronto, which shot 46 percent (41-of-90) and improved to 3-3 all-time in San Antonio. Charles Oakley contributed 13 points and 12 rebounds.

The Raptors shot 58 percent (7-of-12) from 3-point range, with Jackson going 3-of-3 from behind the arc.

"I put a lot of time into my shot and I've played with a lot of great shooters throughout my career, day in, day out," Jackson said. "Whether it's Reggie Miller, Dell Curry, you name it. I have a lot of confidence in my shot and when it's there, I'm going to take it. It's a no-brainer."

Tim Duncan had 22 points and 11 rebounds and Derek Anderson added 20 and 10 for San Antonio, which shot just 4-of-14 and committed five turnovers in the fourth quarter.

"We played good defense on David (Robinson) and Tim," Oakley said. "They're a good team, so it was a big win for us."

Spurs forward Danny Ferry served a one-game suspension for his part in a melee with Marcus Camby in Monday's 104-82 loss at New York.

San Antonio fell to 15-3 at home and has lost three straight overall for the first time since April 2-5, 2000.

Jackson opened the final period with a 16-footer to put the Raptors ahead for good, 76-74. Anderson made a free throw after a technical foul on Oakley, but Jackson answered with a short jumper for a 79-75 advantage with 10:44 remaining.

The Spurs turned over the ball on their first four possessions of the fourth quarter, including a bad pass by Duncan that led to Carter's 21-footer for an 80-75 lead with 10:21 to play.

Peterson capped the run with a 14-footer, giving Toronto a 90-79 cushion with 5:38 left. San Antonio missed its first seven shots from the floor in the period before Terry Porter hit a 3-pointer with 5:14 left. Duncan followed with a basket and Porter had a layup before Antonio Daniels hit a five-footer to pull the Spurs within 90-88 with 3:17 to go.

"This game was extremely frustrating," Daniels said. "We showed a lot of heart and character coming back the way we did, but we made some mistakes down the stretch, and that cost us."

San Antonio had a chance to tie after missed shots by Oakley and Carter, but Duncan over turned the ball with 2 1/2 minutes left. Jackson hit a 3-pointer with 2:17 to play to give Toronto a 93-88 lead. The Spurs made just 3-of-8 free throws in the final two minutes.

Carter scored 19 points in the first half, when the Raptors shot 52 percent (24-of-46) and opened a 55-50 lead.

"It was refreshing to see us hit our shots early," Carter said. "We started off strong. Early at Houston (on Tuesday), we shot poorly. It was good to see us come out and hit our shots."

Toronto scored seven straight points and pushed the lead to 68-58 on a pair of free throws by Jackson with 7:26 left in the third. The Spurs used an 11-2 surge to trim the deficit to 70-69 as Robinson hit a nine-footer with 2:39 remaining.
