Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Jerry Stackhouse scored 36 points, shot 16-of-16 from the foul line and added 11 assists to lift the Detroit Pistons to a 116-110 victory over the Chicago Bulls that snapped their six-game losing streak.

Stackhouse, who came in averaging a league-high 29.8 points per game, led his team in scoring for the 21st straight game as the Pistons beat the Bulls for the seventh time in the last eight meetings.

"That's the strong part of my game, going to the free-throw line, and fortunately I made them tonight," said Stackhouse, who made 4-of-4 free throws in each quarter.

Joe Smith added 23 points and rookie Mateen Cleaves netted 15 for Detroit. Ben Wallace had 13 rebounds as the Pistons held a 16-7 edge in second-chance points.

Dana Barros contributed 10 points off the bench as the Pistons' reserves outscored their counterparts, 34-22.

Ron Mercer scored 33 points on 15-of-23 shooting and Elton Brand contributed 25 and 14 rebounds for Chicago, which has lost seven straight games and is a league-worst 6-33.

"It was a high-scoring game," said Brand. "We stayed with them. It was even most of the way. We played well. We just didn't get any stops at the end. We needed some stops."

The Pistons have won seven of the last eight meetings with the Bulls, who are 1-11 against Central Division foes.

A close contest throughout, the Pistons took their largest lead when Smith hit a 21-footer to give Detroit a 73-65 lead with 7:24 left in the third quarter.

But the Bulls had opportunities late as Mercer converted a three-point play to close the score to 113-110 with 2:08 remaining. Despite shooting 54 percent (42-of-78) for the game, Chicago missed six jumpers in the final 90 seconds.

"Yeah, but it's the same old thing," Mercer said. "Late in the game we're in it, but in the end it's always something -- it's always something ... defense or offense. Tonight it was defense."

Chicago coach Tim Floyd was also disappointed with the club's defensive effort as Detroit shot 53.2 percent (42-of-79) from the floor, including 66.7 percent in the opening quarter.

"None of them really had it tonight on the defensive end," said Floyd. "Again, you have to credit Detroit with a good job of attacking us. It was a deflating loss. We are back home after playing well on the road, with our home crowd behind us. We have been a good defensive team, and tonight we did not have it from the start."

"I don't think anyone expected both teams to score over 100 points tonight," said Pistons coach George Irvine. "Both teams are better defensively than that. I'm just glad to get the win."

Stackhouse started strong, scoring 16 points in the first quarter to give the Pistons a 33-27 advantage at the end of the opening period.

"I felt good and had a good rhythm going," said Stackhouse. "But maybe it was a little fool's gold because I thought I was hot, but I really wasn't."

Stackhouse was only 4-of-17 from the field in the final three quarters, but created points with his perfect night at the stripe.

Cleaves fed off his backcourt mate's energy, making 3-of-3 shots for six points and three assists in the first quarter.

"I felt more comfortable out there," said Cleaves, who was starting his fourth game of the season. "The guys have been on me. They've been talking to me about being myself out there and if I get the shot, to take it. I now come out very aggressive early. I try to give the team a boost. If that means to run it or take the shot if I get it, that's what I'll do."
