Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Paul Pierce finally had a successful return to his native Southern California.

Pierce, who hails from Inglewood, made several key plays down the stretch and Antoine Walker had his fourth triple-double of the year as the Boston Celtics defeated the Los Angeles Clippers, 82-79.

"Our focus was improved tonight and we were doing the little things that it took to win and as a result we won," Pierce said.

Walker had 29 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists but Pierce, who scored 23 points in addtion to 15 rebounds, was the star in his first victory back home as a professional.

With the score tied, 76-76, Los Angeles' Jeff McInnis took off for what appeared to be an uncontested layup. But Pierce rejected the attempt with just under two minutes to play.

Randy Brown threw the ball upcourt to Walker, who drilled a 3-pointer to give Boston a 79-76 lead.

The Clippers responded with a basket from Eric Piatkowski and a free throw from McInnis to tie the score, 79-79, with just under a minute left. Pierce went baseline on Los Angeles rookie Darius Miles and scored on a reverse to give Boston an 81-79 advantage with 43 seconds to go.

Los Angeles' Lamar Odom tried to tie the game on a drive but Pierce stepped in and drew an offensive foul with 16 seconds left.

The Clippers had one last chance when the Celtics were whistled for an ensuing five-second violation. But Odom missed a 3-pointer and Piatkowski got the rebound but stepped on the sideline. Boston's Bryant Stith added one free throw for the final margin.

"I was absolutely shocked," Piatkowski said. "From where I was on the court, I thought I had room. I guess the back of my foot hit the line."

Walker continued his hot play on Boston's road trip, which concludes Sunday at Golden State. He piled up 20 points, 12 assists and 12 rebounds in Monday's victory at Minnesota. His performance was even better in Wednesday's 111-106 loss at Sacramento. Walker finished with a season-high 47 points, including a team-record nine 3-pointers. He also handed out 13 assists, matching a career high.

"This was the most important game for our season," Walker said. "The Clippers are a tough team and we knew we had to play our best game to get the win."

Brown had nine points and six assists for Boston, who shot 43 percent (35-of-81).

Odom led the Clippers with 20 points while Michael Olowokandi added 14. Rookie Quentin Richardson contributed 13 points for Los Angeles, which dropped its fifth straight game.

Seven straight points by Pierce gave Boston a 16-point lead with 4:57 to play in the first half. Boston led, 42-30 at halftime lead as Pierce scored 11 and Walker 10. Los Angeles shot just 29 percent (12-of-42) over the opening 24 minutes.

The Clippers used a 13-2 run to open the third quarter and pull within 44-41. Odom scored five points and had three assists during the spurt. The Celtics had a 58-56 lead at the end of three quarters.

"Lamar is the best player they have to offer and he outplayed us in the third quarter alone," Boston coach Jim O'Brien said.

The Celtics have won six of the last seven meetings with the Clippers.
