Game Story

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) -- Sam Cassell scored 23 points and Glenn Robinson added 20 as the Milwaukee Bucks extended their season-high winning streak to six games with a 105-98 victory over the slumping Charlotte Hornets.

Cassell also grabbed eight rebounds and handed out six assists for the Bucks, who used a balanced attack and a strong effort from the bench to remain unbeaten since a 120-117 loss at Vancouver on January 7.

Lindsey Hunter scored 17 points off the bench and fellow reserve Jason Caffey added 16 as the Bucks' backups outscored Charlotte's second unit, 46-9.

"In order to win in the NBA, you need good production from your bench and we got that tonight," Bucks coach George Karl said. "Jason probably had his best game for us. We really needed that because we were in foul trouble."

Jamal Mashburn had his first career triple-double for the Hornets with 26 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists. Mashburn had 17 points in the first quarter but the Hornets trailed 28-24 after the period.

"Obviously, I'm not into individual accolades because we didn't win," Mashburn said. "We're struggling right now because we just don't make enough plays."

Milwaukee leads second-place Charlotte by 2 1/2 games in the Central Division.

David Wesley scored 23 points and Baron Davis added 18 for the Hornets, who have lost four in a row for the second time since late December and 10 of 13 since a season-high seven-game winning streak.

"We're just struggling right now," Wesley said. "We have to keep working. We have to find a way to break out of this. We gave ourselves some chances but we didn't make enough plays."

Trailing 59-47 at the half, the Hornets made a serious run in the third quarter. Otis Thorpe made a layup, Davis converted a three-point play, P.J. Brown drilled a 19-footer and Davis connected from 18 feet as Charlotte clossed within 67-66 with 6:25 left in the period.

The Hornets forged three ties thereafter but were unable to overtake the Bucks. Hunter's 21-footer beat the third-quarter buzzer and gave Milwaukee a 77-75 lead entering the final 12 minutes.

Hunter continued to cushion the Bucks' advantage by nailing a 15-footer and a 3-pointer to open an 82-75 lead with 11:19 to play.

"We feel like we're one of the deepest teams in the NBA and George has confidence in the bench and we produce," Hunter said.

Brown's 17-footer again cut the deficit to one with 9:38 remaining but the Bucks' backups came through again. Tim Thomas hit a nine-footer and a free throw to spark an 11-4 burst that Cassell capped with a driving layup to make it 93-83 with 5:28 remaining.

Thorpe had eight points and a season-high 15 rebounds for the Hornets, who shot 41 percent (37-of-90) and held a 47-42 rebounding advantage. Thorpe made his first start of the season as starting center Elden Campbell sat out with the flu.

"It's tough to go without our big center and do well in the middle," Charlotte coach Paul Silas said. "I was pleased with Otis' performance. But bench play made a huge difference in the game. Our guys coming off the bench don't really have a lot of experience. Milwaukee had Caffey, Hunter and Thomas coming off the bench."

Thomas scored 13 points and Ray Allen added 11 for Milwaukee, which shot 52 percent (39-of-75) and outscored Charlotte at the line, 22-17.

"We had so much balance tonight," Allen said. "It was nice looking up at the scoreboard and see my big guys get in double figures. We've jumped leaps and bounds since the last time we played (Charlotte, a 106-90 home loss on November 24)."
