Game Story

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Richard Hamilton helped end the Washington Wizards' latest stretch of futility, scoring 29 points in a 94-90 victory over the Atlanta Hawks.

Juwan Howard scored 25 points and Chris Whitney added 18 for the Wizards, who snapped their second nine-game losing streak of the season. Hapless Washington (8-34) also has skids of five and six games this season.

"This makes your whole day better. You can go home and relax, turn on TV, watch ESPN and things like that," said Hamilton, who made just his fourth start of the season. "I haven't watched SportsCenter in a long time. Haven't watched SportsCenter at all."

The Hawks lost their third straight game despite a huge effort from Brevin Knight, who scored a career-high 31 points and added 10 assists and five rebounds. His previous career high in points was 22 against the Chicago Bulls on April 9, 1998.

"We still lost. Points don't matter to me, stats don't matter to me," Knight said. "The bottom line is we still lost."

Five Hawks scored in double figures as Jason Terry scored 16 points, Lorenzo Wright 15 and Dikembe Mutombo and Roshown McLeod 10 each. Mutombo added 15 rebounds.

Washington made seven free throws in the final 22 seconds to avoid its second home loss this season to the Hawks, who have just four wins away from home. Atlanta was winless in its first eight road games before winning at the MCI Center on November 28.

"We said that as our team goal someone other than Jason Terry and Brevin Knight was going to have to beat us and everybody did a good job on them," said Whitney, who shook off a sprained ankle to return in the second quarter.

A jumper by Howard gave the Wizards the lead for good at 80-78 with 5:11 left. Washington twice built leads of six points the rest of the way, once on a jumper by Hamilton with 3:06 left and again on a pair of free throws by Whitney with 22 seconds remaining that made it 89-83.

Terry's 3-pointer with 14 seconds left cut the lead to 89-86 before Whitney sank two free throws to make it a five-point game. Knight cut it back to three with a pair of free throws, before Hamilton iced the victory with two more shots from the line with 6.7 seconds left.

Jahadi White added 10 points and 12 rebounds for Washington.

"All year long we have been losing in the fourth quarter," Terry said. "We just can't seem to overcome certain mental mistakes in the fourth quarter."

Atlanta led by as many as 11 points, building a 39-28 cushion in the second quarter on a layup by Wright with 7:06 left in the second quarter. Washington was able to slice the deficit to 47-42 as Hamilton scored eight straight of his team's points.
