Game Story

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (Ticker) -- For the second time this season, LaPhonso Ellis drove a dagger into the Vancouver Grizzlies.

Ellis scored nine of his 13 points in the final 5:34 and hit the biggest shot of the game to lead the Minnesota Timberwolves to a 96-94 victory over the struggling Vancouver Grizzlies.

With 45 seconds left, Ellis received an inbounds pass and nailed a fadeaway 3-pointer as the shot clock expired to give Minnesota a 92-88 lead.

"Tonight LaPhonso's number was picked out of the lottery and he hit the shot," Kevin Garnett said. "The shot changed the momentum and we went on to win the game."

Ellis was just 1-of-8 from the arc entering this game.

"(The play) wasn't for me, I just happened to pop open and fortunately it went down," Ellis said. "I haven't had a lot of opportunities this year, but if you watch me in warmups that is a shot I practice."

Former Grizzlie Anthony Peeler sealed the game from the line, sinking four free throws in final 10 seconds.

In the previous meeting between the teams this season on November 22, Ellis tipped in a miss by Kevin Garnett with three seconds left to give the Timberwolves a 101-100 victory.

"He's like a Grizzlie killer, I guess," Vancouver coach Sidney Lowe said. "He was determined to make plays and he made them."

Michael Dickerson followed Ellis' shot with a layup that brought Vancouver within 92-90 with 34 seconds left. Garnett misfired on a jump shot but the ball was knocked out of bounds by the Grizzlies, who were forced to foul Peeler with 10 seconds on the clock.

He made both and Dickerson sank two on the other end to keep it close. But Peeler buried two more with five seconds left to put away the game.

Garnett and Terrell Brandon each had 20 points and six assists. Peeler finished with nine points and Todd Day added 11 off the bench for Minnesota, which was undefeated on its three-game road trip.

"We knew these guys were struggling so it's a nice way to end a road trip to come out and get a win," Garnett said.

"We played against some great teams -- Seattle, Utah and Vancouver is always tough at home and they gave us a great battle," Wolves forward Wally Szczerbiak said. "We didn't come up with our `A' game but our effort was there and that's the key."

The game featured 17 lead changes and neither team led by more than five points. The Grizzlies are 2-10 in games decided by three points or less.

"I don't know how many times we can take this before we do something about it," Lowe said.

Vancouver shot 50 percent (39-of-78) from the field but its bench was outscored, 35-9.

"I thought our guys gave a good effort out there, we certainly had a chance to win this game, Lowe said. " We didn't hit a couple of shots we needed to and they made the plays again that needed to be made."

Shareef Abdur-Rahim had 24 points on 10-of-17 shooting and 11 rebounds and Michael Dickerson also scored 24 points. Mike Bibby collected 19 points and Othella Harrington 12 for the Grizzlies, who dropped their fourth straight game and fell to 4-24 against Western Conference opponents.

The Timberwolves took the lead for good with 4:01 remaining when Peeler made a 19-foot jumper from the left baseline for an 83-82.

Ellis made it 89-86 with 1:27 left. Abdur-Rahim answered with a short jumper, setting the stage for Ellis' clutch shot.

The Timberwolves have won the last seven meetings with the Grizzlies and improved to 11-11 on the road this season.
