Game Story

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) -- Jamal Mashburn had 31 points, 13 rebounds and fueled a decisive run to close the first half as the Charlotte Hornets snapped a five-game losing streak with an 81-67 triumph over the slumping New York Knicks.

Mashburn had 18 points and 11 rebounds in the Hornets' previous meeting with the Knicks this season, an 81-67 loss in which Charlotte matched an NBA record for second-half futility with 19 points after intermission.

"I don't even think that was even brought up. We were more concerned with the losing streak," Mashburn responded when asked if the Hornets used the Garden debacle as motivation.

The Hornets were not exactly lighting up the scoreboard Wednesday until Mashburn took control. He made three free throws, a 19-footer, a 3-pointer and a layup to fuel a 13-3 burst before Baron Davis closed the first-half scoring with a 3-pointer that gave Charlotte a 38-36 lead. The Hornets did not trail thereafter.

Mashburn hit 10-of-22 shots, 10-of-13 free throws and handed out three assists in 43 strong minutes as the Hornets scored 26 third-quarter points to open a 64-52 lead entering the final period.

"We just played great defense," Mashburn said. "We held them to I don't know how many points, but we just continued to play and continued to work through what we have to work through."

David Wesley -- the only other Charlotte player to score in double figures -- had 18 points as the Hornets won for the first time since an 86-85 triumph at league-worst Chicago on January 12.

"We finally got off the schneid," Hornets coach Paul Silas said. "We played with a lot of effort. We played a strong game defensively. I know the guys are feeling good about themselves again. They leaned on each other tonight which was great."

"It was tough be we had to get off the losing streak," Wesley said. "We played good defense and found ways to get to the basket. That's the way we want to win."

Latrell Sprewell scored 22 points for the Knicks, who were lacking a physical presence in the middle in the second half without suspended center Marcus Camby and after Kurt Thomas suffered an ankle injury in the first half.

"Charlotte's size basically dominated us tonight," Thomas said. "We need the couple of days off before our next game (Saturday vs. the Los Angeles Lakers) to get some bodies rested. We had to go with a small lineup tonight and that killed us."

New York has lost three in a row for the first time this season.

Allan Houston scored 18 points on 5-of-15 shooting and former Hornet Glen Rice missed 8-of-12 shots en route to 11 points for the Knicks, who shot 33 percent (24-of-72). New York made just 9-of-39 shots in the second half.

"We didn't get it going like we are used to getting it going," Rice said. "We have to iron out our wrinkles and get back on the winning page."

Davis had nine points and nine assists and Elden Campbell added eight and 10 rebounds for Charlotte, which shot 41 percent (29-of-71) and made half its 30 shots after halftime.

"We needed this one but we need every one," Campbell said. "We needed to get our flow going. We played a team game tonight. We found a way to win. We're professionals. We need to correct our mistakes and keep getting better."

Charlie Ward opened the second-half scoring to forge a 38-38 tie but Davis dunked, Mashburn hit an 18-footer and Wesley made a layup and a pair of 21-footers before P.J. Brown hit a jumper to make it 50-38 with 6:16 left in the third quarter.

The Knicks missed their first 13 shots in the period before Rice hit a 3-pointer to get New York within 57-47 with 2:53 left.

Brown made two free throws to open the fourth-quarter scoring and Davis and Mashburn followed with consecutive jumpers as Charlotte opened a 70-52 cushion with 9:31 to play.
