Game Story

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) -- Walt Williams showed the Charlotte Hornets he can do more than shoot.

Williams scored 15 of his 18 points on 3-pointers and made a key block to repel a fourth-quarter rally as the hot-shooting Houston Rockets held on for a 110-97 victory over the reeling Hornets, their first in Charlotte in nearly five years.

Williams made a trio of 3-pointers and scored 11 points in the second quarter, when Houston shot 72 percent (13-of-18) from the field, held Charlotte to 11 points and opened a 56-42 halftime lead.

"It's all in the haircut," Rockets coach Rudy Tomjanovich joked. "He's been great. His percentage has been great since he cut the locks off and I keep a razor with me all the time."

The Rockets led 88-69 entering the fourth quarter but the Hornets rallied and closed the deficit to 93-85 on a jumper by Derrick Coleman with 5:36 remaining. Charlotte had a chance to get closer, but Williams smothered a driving layup by Baron Davis and sank a free throw at the other end to stem the rally.

The Hornets got no closer than seven points thereafter and Williams delivered the dagger with his fifth 3-pointer with 1:29 to play, opening a 104-93 lead.

"I knew I was hot early in the game. At that time, I hadn't put up any shots," Williams said. "We were struggling to score baskets. Then Maurice (Taylor) threw it to me. I turned to the basket and had a look."

Cuttino Mobley scored 23 points and Steve Francis added 20 and 10 assists for the Rockets, who shot 59 percent (43-of-73) from the field, 11-of-17 from the arc and improved to 6-1 on the road vs. Eastern Conference teams.

"They didn't miss, basically," Hornets guard Baron Davis said. "They just didn't miss."

The Rockets won in Charlotte for the first time since February 1, 1996.

"When you have a young team, you are always concerned with when are they going to learn how to win in the road," Tomjanovich said. "We have a lot of competitors. We have a lot of guys who like the hostile environment. It fires them up."

David Wesley scored 25 points and Jamal Mashburn added 20 for the Hornets, who have lost six of their last seven games and 12 of 16. Charlotte begins a four-game road trip Monday at Golden State.

Wesley scored 13 points in the first quarter as Charlotte raced to a 31-24 lead. But Williams heated up midway through the second period, making 3-pointers around a jumper by Mashburn to give Houston the lead for good at 43-40.

"Our big men were running the floor and that was sucking the defense in," Williams said.

A dunk by Carlos Rogers, a layup by Williams and a free throw by Moochie Norris extended the advantage to 48-40 with 3:48 left. Williams and Kenny Thomas made 3-pointers to help push the lead to 14 points at halftime.

"If you don't (rotate), somebody else will be wide open," said Tomjanovich. "They're trying to cover the next option and the ball moves faster than people. We tried to put it in the last spot."

Mobley scored 13 points in the third quarter and a free throw by Francis gave the Rockets a 93-71 lead with 9:42 left before the Hornets rallied with 14 consecutive points, including six by Derrick Coleman.

Taylor scored 18 points for the Rockets, who forced 15 turnovers and converted them into 29 points.

Coleman scored 17 points, Elden Campbell added 12 and Davis handed out 12 assists for the Hornets, who shot 51.5 percent (35-of-68).

"You figure you shoot 50 percent, you'll take that any day," Campbell said. "They shot the ball well. We ran our stuff and executed. I'm not sure if it was their shooting or our defense."
