Game Story

DENVER (Ticker) -- It came down to the last shot and Antonio McDyess got it.

McDyess rebounded a miss by teammate Robert Pack and banked it home at the buzzer, giving the Denver Nuggets a 102-100 victory over the Dallas Mavericks and their league-leading 20th home win.

In a wild one between Western Conference upstarts that featured three lead changes and a tie in the final 98 seconds. The tie came when Dallas guard Steve Nash drove for a layup with 16 seconds to play.

Denver called timeout, inbounded in the backcourt to Pack, who used a stutter step against Nash to free himself for a pull-up jumper in the lane.

The shot hit the back of the rim, bounced over the outstretched arms of 7-6 center Shawn Bradley and into the hands of McDyess, who flipped his 19th rebound off the glass and in as the horn sounded.

"I thought when Pack shot, it was going to be good," McDyess said. "I grabbed the rebound with one hand and got the shot off as quick as I could before Shawn could get his hand up."

"If I block out McDyess on the last play we go to overtime and who know what would have happened," Bradley said. "It was my responsibility to block him out and get a hand on the ball. I did not box him out like I should have. End of story."

The basket was a nice finish to a tough game for McDyess, who was double-teamed all game and managed just 11 points on 5-of-13 shooting.

"They frustrate McDyess," Nuggets coach Dan Issel said. "And we didn't do a good job of getting open when they double-team him. Getting the game-winner was justification for his frustrating night."

"On the last play, somebody didn't put a body on McDyess and he got the tip," Dallas interim coach Donn Nelson said. "McDyess is an All-Star player in my book and he made an All-Star play."

The Nuggets showed the Mavericks how tough they are at the Pepsi Center. They won their ninth straight home game despite being without center Raef LaFrentz (sprained right ankle) and losing guard Nick Van Exel (right plantar fascia rupture) in the third quarter.

"He has a torn tendon under his foot," Issel said. "It could be two days or it could be two weeks. We'll know more on Monday."

Van Exel and Kevin Willis scored 18 points apiece for Denver, which snapped a six-game losing streak to Dallas.

The Nuggets, who have not made the playoffs since 1995, are 26-18, their best mark after 44 games since the 1987-88 season. The Mavericks, who have not reached the postseason since 1990, fell to 28-18.

"That's the way it is in the West," Nelson said. "Every team is tough. They played well tonight without two of their better players. They executed and we didn't."

Michael Finley scored 32 points, Nash added 23 and Dirk Nowitzki 21 for the Mavs, who had won four of their last five games.

Van Exel went down with 5:13 left in the third quarter and the Nuggets holding a 69-68 lead. Without him, they pushed the advantage to 87-77 on a basket by Willis with 9:38 remaining.

The Mavs responded with a 14-2 burst, taking a 93-89 lead on a basket by Finley with 5:22 remaining.

McDyess made a free throw and Willis scored before a 3-pointer by James Posey gave Denver a 95-93 lead with 1:38 to play. Two more free throws by Willis doubled the margin before Nash led back Dallas.

The point guard made a 3-pointer and two free throws to give the Mavs a 98-97 edge with 46 seconds left. Posey drilled another 3-pointer for a 100-98 lead with 28 seconds to go before Nash drove for the tying hoop.

"I would rather have lost by 20 points," Nash said.

Voshon Lenard scored 15 points, George McCloud added 14 and Posey 12 for the Nuggets, who shot 43 percent (38-of-88).

Nowitzki had 14 rebounds for Dallas, which shot 44 percent (36-of-82) but were outrebounded, 49-32.

Finley scored 24 points in the first half as Dallas opened a 58-53 lead.

"Finley hurt us in the first half and Nash and Nowitzki hurt us in the second half but except for their big three, we were able to keep everyone in check," Issel said.
