Game Story

OAKLAND, California (Ticker) -- Jamal Mashburn scored 27 points as the Charlotte Hornets opened a four-game western road trip with a 93-85 victory over the Golden State Warriors.

The win moved Charlotte within 2 1/2 games of first-place Milwaukee in the Central Division. Hornets coach Paul Silas also climbed within 13 victories of current Golden State coach Dave Cowens for second place on Charlotte's all-time list.

Cowens coached his first game against his former team.

"I just felt good about tonight," Silas said. "I felt good about the team and where we are right now. We've had good practices. We all just have to find a way to get this thing back together and get it done. This was a big step tonight."

"Each one of those guys plays hard for Dave Cowens and they have a lot of respect for him," Hornets forward P.J. Brown said. "We didn't come in with the mindset that this was going to be an easy game. We knew it was going to be a dogfight and that's what we got tonight."

Elden Campbell added 15 points and 12 rebounds and Davis had 12 points and 12 assists. Charlotte won despite a dismal fourth quarter in which both teams scored only 13 points. The Hornets made only 6-of-22 shots (24 percent) while the Warriors converted 5-of-22 (23 percent).

"It was a helter skelter ball game," Charlotte guard Baron Davis said. "Defensively we were forcing them into some tough shots and they were doing the same to us."

David Wesley scored 12 points and Brown chipped in with 11 and 11 rebounds as Charlotte, which shot 43 percent (36-of-84), placed all five starters in double figures.

Bob Sura's layup got Golden State within 31-29 just over two minutes into the second quarter. But Charlotte went on a 13-4 run, capped by Mashburn's basket with 6 1/2 minutes left in the half for a 44-33 lead. The Hornets took a 58-46 advantage into the locker room.

Mookie Blaylock made a 3-pointer with 1:22 left in the third quarter that cut the Warriors' deficit to 75-72. But Charlotte scored the final five points of the period for an 80-72 lead.

Antawn Jamison scored 31 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for Golden State, which swept both meetings from the Hornets last season. Larry Hughes added 19 points and 11 boards as the Warriors lost for the fourth time in their last six home games.

"We couldn't make a shot in the fourth quarter," Cowens said. "They were doubling Antawn some and hitting Mookie which made it tough for us. If they're going to take that away, someone else is going to have to hit a shot."

Blaylock had 14 points while rookie Marc Jackson had 13 and eight rebounds. Hughes, Sura and Blaylock each dished out six assists although Blaylock and Sura combined to make just 7-of-27 shots.

"We did a good job of coming back," Jamison said. "We have to do a better job defensively. We struggled the last four minutes and you can't do that after you get yourself into a hole."

Golden State shot 38 percent (35-of-93) and was outrebounded, 55-47.
