Game Story

BOSTON (Ticker) -- Paul Pierce scored 14 of his 28 points in the fourth quarter as the Boston Celtics used a dominant final 15 minutes to rally for a 99-87 victory over the hapless Detroit Pistons.

Pierce made 5-of-7 shots over the final 12 minutes as the Celtics posted their first three-game winning streak since April 2000. Antoine Walker added 27 points for the Celtics, who improved to 6-4 under interim coach Jim O'Brien.

"The feeling is great in this locker room," Walker said. "We've got 13 guys dedicated, turning things around, winning games, putting ourselves in a position to make the playoffs."

Boston trailed by 10 after the first quarter and 13 at halftime but closed the game with a 40-15 run.

The Pistons led 72-59 with 1:42 left in the third quarter but Boston closed the quarter with seven straight points. Walker had a dunk to ignite the run and buried a 3-pointer with 23 seconds left in the quarter to get Boston within six.

Detroit held a 74-68 lead 90 seconds into the final quarter when Pierce got going. He buried a 17-footer and was fouled. After completing the three-point play, Pierce sank a 3-pointer with 9:41 remaining to knot the contest.

Walker put the Celtics on top for good with a basket 43 seconds later and Pierce buried a 16-footer from the left wing for a 78-74 edge. The lead was 10 with 3:26 to go but Detroit climbed back within 92-87 with 2:27 left before Boston sealed the win by scoring the final seven points.

"We kept our heads and turned it around in the second half," Pierce said. "Shots were there all night, we just didn't hit them in the first half. We started hitting them in the second half."

"Give Boston credit," Pistons coach George Irvine said. "We had them down, they could have easily quit. Their two guys (Walker and Pierce) came up big in the second half."

Chucky Atkins scored 20 points and reserve John Wallace added 16 points in 23 minutes for Detroit. The Pistons have dropped five of six and 11 of 13.

"I don't know what we were doing (in the second half)," Irvine added. "I think we thought the game was over. ... We didn't guard. (We had) so many breakdowns in the second half, that shows that we didn't know what we were doing."

Detroit starting center Ben Wallace was held without a point in 34 minutes but did grab 10 rebounds. Wallace also was involved in a late incident with Walker, which led to the Celtics' forward getting ejected.

Walker and Pierce combined to make 16-of-25 shots in the second half and Boston made 23-of-39 attempts over the final 24 minutes.

"They are good players," Pistons forward Michael Curry said. "They won't miss shots all night. We gave them life in the second half and they started making shots. You have to hand it to them for making those shots."

Detroit got off to a quick start, breaking open a 4-4 game by scoring 20 of the next 24 points. Atkins had 10 points in the spurt and Curry added six.

The Pistons made just 9-of-16 free throws and committed 23 turnovers.

Detroit's Jerry Stackhouse, the NBA's leading scorer, was held to 12 points on 6-of-17 shooting.
