Game Story

SEATTLE (Ticker) -- Karl Malone scored 25 points to surpass another milestone and the Utah Jazz used a 26-5 burst bridging the third and fourth quarters for a 102-88 victory over the Seattle SuperSonics, who had a five-game winning streak snapped.

Malone made all 13 free throws and became just the second player in NBA history to surpass 32,000 points with 32,022. He had nine rebounds, leaving him one short of 13,000 for his career.

The next rebound for Malone, who was named to the All-Star team earlier in the day, will make him the sixth player in NBA history to surpass 26,000 points and 13,000 rebounds.

"It means that I've been around a lot and I've shot a lot," Malone said. "I have been fortunate enough to stay healthy and they've run a lot of plays for me. I don't think about it that much because I'm still playing the game."

Seattle took its last lead at 62-61 on a layup by Gary Payton with 5:39 to go in the third quarter. John Stockton responded with four straight points as Utah closed the period with a 15-5 run and a 76-67 lead.

The Jazz put away the game with 11 consecutive points to open the fourth quarter, capped by two free throws by Malone with 6:43 to play. The SuperSonics had a pair of turnovers and missed six shots in that decisive span.

"I thought we did a good job of executing and got the basketball where you think it should go," Utah coach Jerry Sloan said. "I thought we competed hard. We kept trying to give ourselves a chance by running our offense."

Utah, which leads the Midwest Division by one game over San Antonio, led by as many as 24 points in the final period.

Donyell Marshall scored 17 points on 8-of-13 shooting and John Starks and Bryon Russell each added 13 points for the Jazz, who shot 51 percent (38-of-75).

"We just came out more focused," Marshall said. "We knew we had to stop them on defense. We had to stop the other team's fast break. We have so many options off our plays that we always have other teams thinking."

Payton scored 23 points and Brent Barry had 15 and nine rebounds for the Sonics, who shot 41 percent (29-of-71). Seattle committed 19 turnovers, which led to 20 points by the Jazz.

"We've been talking about turnovers for the last four or five games," Seattle coach Nate McMillan said. "Giving them points off your turnovers and then allowing them to get easy baskets, you just don't win this game. You won't ever beat Utah."

The Seattle frontcourt of Vin Baker, Rashard Lewis and Patrick Ewing combined to make just 11-of-32 shots. Lewis and Shammond Williams each scored 11.

"You do not want to allow Utah to set the tempo and get you in a walking-the-ball-up game," McMillan said. "They are great at that. We played their tempo the whole night."

The SuperSonics played without rookie Desmond Mason, a 2000 graduate of Oklahoma State. Mason left the team to visit his alma mater in the wake of Saturday's tragic place crash. He is expected to play in Thursday's game with Chicago.

The game was the first meeting between the teams since Utah's five-game triumph in the first round of the 2000 NBA playoffs.
