Game Story

PORTLAND, Oregon (Ticker) -- Steve Smith carried his team on his shoulders by scoring 17 fourth-quarter points to lift the Portland Trail Blazers over the Phoenix Suns, 100-92.

Smith, who lost his starting job earlier this season, came off the bench to rally Portland past Phoenix for the first time in three meetings this season.

Hot-tempered Rasheed Wallace was whistled for his league-leading 27th technical foul and was subsequently ejected with 8:56 to play. Wallace's outburst seemed to spark the Blazers, who led 77-70 when he was tossed.

"We had a seven-point lead," Portland coach Mike Dunleavy said. "In the huddle, I told them, `We gotta take this home, make it happen now.' "

After being ejected during a timeout, Wallace hit a referee in the head with a towel and was restrained while kicking over papers on the bench in dismay.

"I don't know what happened down there," Dunleavy said. "I can't answer for the ref, he (Wallace) shouldn't have done what he did, but I heard (Phoenix coach) Scott Skiles say, `Throw him out, throw him out,' and the official reacted to it."

Smith proceeded to take over the game, scoring 15 of his 20 points after Wallace left.

Wallace had two second-half points to finish with 19 and Damon Stoudamire had 17 and 10 assists.

Phoenix cut the lead to 95-92 with 48 seconds to play when former Blazer Cliff Robinson knocked down a deep 3-pointer for his season-high 42nd point.

"It's always nice to play against these guys," Robinson said. "But I don't think I have any extra incentive or anything like that."

But after Jason Kidd missed an easy layup that bounced off the back of the rim, Kidd fouled Smith, who converted a pair of shots from the line, and Portland never looked back.

Kidd fouled out on Phoenix's next trip amid boos from the crowd at the Rose Garden in response to his domestic abuse charge for striking his wife in the mouth.

"We were right there, I just couldn't make a shot," Kidd said. "When we we down seven, we felt good. We just couldn't get past five. Cliff kept us in the game offensively and defensively."

Rodney Rogers scored 11 points and Kidd, Tony Delk and Vinny Del Negro added 10 apiece for Phoenix.

Portland went on a 25-10 run in the third quarter to race to a 66-55 lead.

"We won three quarters, but the third quarter was our demise," Skiles said. "We shot 30 percent and they outscored us, 32-19. We have a third quarter like that almost every night."

Bonzi Wells scored nine during the surge and Stoudamire had seven as Portland took the lead for good.

Portland's bench outscored Phoenix's, 49-31.

Arvydas Sabonis scored 15 points for Portland, which shot 47 percent (34-of-73).

Phoenix went cold to start the second half. After leading 45-41 at the break and shooting 46 percent, Phoenix missed 11-of-14 shots to start the third quarter and converted just 7-of-23 from the floor. They went just 2-of-10 from long range and were outrebounded, 44-39.

The Suns won the first two meetings with Portland this season -- both in Phoenix -- by a combined 31 points. They earned an 84-79 victory on December 3 and a 108-82 rout on November 2.
