Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- Eddie Jones scored 24 points and pulled down 12 rebounds as the Miami Heat, playing the 1,000th game in franchise history, defeated the Atlanta Hawks, 91-80.

Tim Hardaway scored 18 points and Brian Grant had 16 and 12 rebounds for Miami, which closed a three-game road trip after having a five-game winning streak snapped in Thursday's overtime loss at Dallas.

"I thought we bounced back from a tough loss last night," Miami coach Pat Riley said. "We did some things tonight. Rebounding the basketball was a key factor for us. We have a lot of guys that are banged up, we just dug in, it was a gutty win. We look at this road trip and we were one free throw away from sweeping this road trip."

The Heat, who entered the NBA in 1988, improved to 477-523 in their history. They have won four straight Atlantic Division titles but neever have played for a championship.

Roshown McLeod's jumper nearly two minutes into the fourth quarter pulled Atlanta within 68-66. Miami responded with a jumper by Anthony Carter and a 3-pointer by Jones for a 73-66 lead with just under nine minutes remaining.

The Hawks got within 80-76 on Jason Terry's jumper with 3:53 to go. But a layup by Bruce Bowen and a jumper by Brian Grant restored an eight-point advantage with just under eight minutes left.

"We got in a position to (win)," Atlanta coach Lon Kruger said. "We got a chance there late in the third. We started getting a little bit of activity but Miami pounded us on the boards, pounded us physically. We've got a long way to go, we've got a lot of work to do."

Miami took advantage of 24 fouls by Atlanta to convert 25-of-31 free throws. The Heat (29-19) improved to 10-5 in the second of back-to-back games.

"It's going to be a tough game whether they played last night or not," Terry said. "Their record in back-to-back speaks for itself."

Hardaway left the game in the third quarter after banging his knee but did return midway through the fourth period.

Anthony Mason, who made just 2-of-12 shots, grabbed 16 rebounds as Miami outrebounded the Hawks, 50-38. The Heat shot just 39 percent (29-of-74).

"It's not always about how you shoot," Mason said. "We made plays when it counted and we made stops when it counted. We made it difficult for them, we controled the boards."

Terry scored 31 points for the Hawks, who have dropped all three meetings with Miami this season. Lorenzen Wright added 17 points and 10 rebounds as Atlanta lost despite shooting 44 percent (35-of-79).

Center Dikembe Mutombo had two blocked shots to give him 2,542 for his career, moving him past Tree Rollins into sixth place on the all-time list. Mutombo also grabbed 10 rebounds.

Rookie DerMarr Johnson suffered through 3-of-11 shooting and finished with eight points.

Jumpers by Jones and Mason gave Miami a 54-44 lead with 7:47 left in the third quarter. Atlanta battled back and forged a 60-60 tie on Terry's three-point play with just under four minutes remaining. Miami led, 68-64, at the end of three quarters.
