Game Story

INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- A seesaw affair rocked the right way for the Indiana Pacers in the fourth quarter.

Reggie Miller scored 14 of his 27 points in the fourth quarter as the Pacers continued their recent mastery of the Denver Nuggets by pulling away for a 103-94 victory.

In a game that featured six ties and 20 lead changes, the Pacers took the lead for good in the waning seconds of third quarter before taking charge over the final 12 minutes.

After going scoreless in the third quarter, Miller awoke in the final period by making 4-of-6 shots from the field, including 2-of-3 attempts from 3-point range.

"I felt much fresher in the fourth quarter," Miller said. "I felt like I had my legs under me. I think we're probably going to go to a different strategy in my minutes which is pretty good so I can be a little fresher late in ballgames."

"I've been playing him 40-plus minutes and I thought tonight was a good night to get him rest," said Pacers coach Isiah Thomas, who played Miller 39 minutes. "We've got to continue to buy him time in a game."

Miller's shot from behind the arc with 69 seconds remaining capped a 7-0 burst that gave Indiana a 96-85 advantage.

Jalen Rose added 26 points and Travis Best 16 and 10 assists for the Pacers, who beat Denver for the 10th straight time since a 107-92 loss on March 31, 1995. It is the longest current streak for the Pacers against any opponent.

"We didn't play with the urgency that this was a big game," Denver coach Dan Issel said. "We worry about other things than winning the game. We have to quit worrying about individual performances and worry about winning the game."

Indiana played without forward Jermaine O'Neal, who missed the game with a strained left groin.

Antonio McDyess netted 25 points and Nick Van Exel had 19 and 10 assists for Denver, which fell to 0-6 on the road vs. Eastern Conference foes this season.

Indiana took the lead for good, 70-68, with 3.7 seconds left in the third quarter when 6-10 forward Jeff Foster sank his first career 3-pointer. In the first three quarters, neither team led by more than five points.

"When I was in college I was 4-of-4 so I wanted to take this shot tonight to show people I could make it," said Foster, who was 0-of-4 from the arc in his career. "I know Isiah didn't like that, but I made it. I probably won't be shooting too many more of them. I felt really good because it helped us win the game."

A dunk by Zan Tabak, who scored 11 points, stretched the Pacers' advantage to 82-73 with 7:45 remaining. But Denver, attempting to stop a four-game road losing streak, would not go quietly.

The Nuggets used a 12-7 burst to pull within four points with 3:46 to play. Best answered with an 18-footer and a 3-pointer before Miller also connected from behind the arc.

Best played 37 minutes off the bench and made 6-of-13 shots. He led the Pacers' reserves, who outscored Denver's bench, 39-23.

Indiana shot 50 percent (40-of-80) while holding Denver to 44 percent (35-of-80).

Kevin Willis was a force for the Nuggets off the bench in the opening half, scoring 12 of his 15 points to help Denver to a 52-51 lead. Rose kept the Pacers in it by scoring 15 points in the half.
