Game Story

SALT LAKE CITY (Ticker) -- Karl Malone scored 28 points, tying his team record for consecutive shots made, and Donyell Marshall added 21 and 10 rebounds as the Utah Jazz posted a 111-91 victory over the undermanned Seattle SuperSonics.

Malone went 12-of-12 from the floor, equaling his team record from a 106-93 win over the Los Angeles Lakers on April 6, 1999. The 13-time All-Star also made 4-of-5 free throws as the Jazz won for the 11th time in 13 games.

"I wasn't perfect, I missed a free throw," Malone said. "We won the game, I missed a free throw so it wasn't perfect. The day I'm perfect from the free-throw line, with no turnovers I'll retire. OK? No turnovers, perfect from the field, from the free-throw line, I'll retire."

Bryon Russell started at shooting guard in place of John Starks and recorded 21 points, six rebounds and six assists for Utah. Starks was in Oklahoma to attend his mother's funeral.

John Stockton handed out 15 assists and Greg Ostertag scored 13 points off the bench for the Jazz, who remained one game in front of the San Antonio Spurs for the Midwest Division lead.

"It was a very good win," Ostertag said. "The Western Conference is very full and I feel like they (Golden State) got off to a slow start, but they're starting to play a lot better and they're going to be in there with about 12 other teams in this league trying to get a playoff spot, so it's a big win for us."

Stockton and reserve point guard Jacque Vaughn combined to miss 14-of-17 shots, but the rest of the team shot a scorching 65.5 percent (38-of-58).

Rashard Lewis scored 19 points and reserve Vin Baker added 17 for Seattle, which was without starters Gary Payton and Ruben Patterson.

"Donyell brings a lot of versatility in the game," Baker said. "He's legitimately 7-feet (6-9) tall playing the three spot. He's able to rebound, shoot the three and post-up. It was a great test for us. We did not pass it."

Payton, an All-Star point guard, sat out with an abdominal strain, Patterson, a defensive-minded small forward, served the second of a three-game NBA suspension for pleading guilty to a misdemeanor assault charge.

"Gary is not here, Ruben is not here," Seattle coach Nate McMillan said. "That's part of the game. We can't say how much we missed them and whether they would have made a difference. Who knows?"

Malone scored 14 points and Marshall added 11 in the first half when the Jazz built a 50-47 advantage.

"It was definitely fun at first, they made a good game out of it in the third quarter," Marshall said. "We knew that they were going to come out there and play hard, we've been through these games all year. We've seen teams playing without their best players and they're going to come out there and prove a point that they can play and they did that for a while."

Brent Barry hit a 3-pointer to cap a 7-0 burst, tying the score at 69-69 with 4:37 left in the third. Ostertag answered with a free throw 22 seconds later, give the Jazz the lead for good. Marshall followed with a 3-pointer 42 seconds later and Malone made 1-of-2 from the line to push the lead to 74-69 with 2:44 left.

Utah took an 83-74 lead into the final period. The Jazz scored 13 unanswered points to take their biggest lead, 100-77, when Russell completed a three-point play with 4:28 left.
