Game Story

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- Jason Kidd was missing shots all game, except when it counted the most.

Kidd, who missed eight of his first 10 shots, connected on two key jumpers in the final three minutes as the Phoenix Suns held off the Charlotte Hornets, 85-82.

"I haven't been shooting the ball all that well lately," Kidd said. "But I was able to make a couple down the stretch. The biggest thing is I am going to continue to keep shooting and sooner or later they will fall."

Elden Campbell's fallaway jumper from the baseline tied the game at 74-74 with 3:37 left. Kidd, a 40 percent shooter, gave Phoenix the lead for good with a long jumper that made it 76-74 with 2:34 to go.

A feed from Kidd to Tom Gugliotta led to a dunk and Shawn Marion fed Kidd for another jumper that gave the Suns an 80-74 lead with 1:19 to play.

A basket by Eddie Robinson pulled Charlotte within 82-80 with 14 seconds left and Kidd made 1-of-2 free throws for a three-point lead with 13.2 seconds. But the Hornets elected to go inside for a quick score rather then attempt a tying 3-pointer and saw Baron Davis miss twice from in close.

Phoenix corraled the rebound and Tony Delk sealed the win with two free throws with 4.7 seconds. Charlotte's Jamal Mashburn hit a meaningless shot at the buzzer for the final margin.

"We won because we outrebounded them and we were very active in the fourth quarter," Phoenix coach Scott Skiles said. "Charlotte only shot 26 percent in the fourth quarter and I thought we made the big plays down the stretch that we needed to."

Delk and Rodney Rogers each scored 16 points for Phoenix, which has won three of its last four. Kidd finished with 11 points, nine assists and six rebounds despite 4-of-12 shooting.

"Although we struggled to put the ball in the basket and we missed dunks, we fought through it," Skiles said. "When the game was on the line, we rose up and took it."

Marion grabbed 13 rebounds and Gugliotta had 11 as the Suns outrebounded the Hornets, 52-42. The Suns coverted 19 offensive rebounds into 16 second-chance points.

Gugliotta, who has battled knee problems and family issues throughout the season, added 10 points on 5-of-13 shooting in 32 minutes off the bench.

"I had 10 days off where I was able to lift some weights, run and my knee felt great," Gugliotta said. "My knee felt great. Now we get a break for the All-Star Game and can come back strong. If I can move like that every night, I expect to be productive."

Mashburn scored 27 points but just three in the final quarter. Derrick Coleman added 12 points as the Hornets lost for the sixth time in their last seven road games.

"We get open looks and they don't go down," Charlotte coach Paul Silas said. "When they don't you aren't going to score many points. They had a guy shooting 2-of-10 and he comes down and hits (two) straight shots. That's just the way it is."

David Wesley scored 11 points and Elden Campbell and Baron Davis had 10 apiece as Charlotte shot just 41 percent (31-of-76).

"We had some mental breakdowns, but I think it was what happened before that," Davis said. "We had three turnovers in a row down the stretch. We weren't executing or shooting well."

The evenly played game was typified by a tight third quarter that had six ties and in which neither team led by more than four points.

The Hornets opened strong and took a 20-9 lead on a 3-pointer by Mashburn with 4:37 to go in the first quarter. However, the Suns closed the opening period with a 13-3 spurt capped by a 3-pointer by Rogers that cut the deficit to 23-22.

Phoenix scored the last six points of the second quarter, including a tip-in by Gugliotta with two seconds left to trail, 44-43, at halftime.

The Suns have won their last four home meetings with the Hornets.
