Game Story

BOSTON (Ticker) -- The Boston Celtics have turned into a different team under Jim O'Brien.

Antoine Walker scored 36 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as the Celtics extended their season-high winning streak to six games with a 103-82 rout of the slumping Cleveland Cavaliers.

After missing Friday's game at Detroit to attend his grandmother's funeral in Chicago, Walker returned with a vengeance, making 14-of-25 shots from the field.

The 6-9 forward, who scored 19 points in the third quarter, did not arrive at FleetCenter until three hours before the game.

"My plane left at about 11 this morning, I got in about 3," Walker said. "I didn't know what type of shape I would be in to play this game. My grandmother was very, very special to me. But my mother was supportive and said to go out and play. So for three hours today my mind was completely focused on basketball."

Paul Pierce added 22 points for the Celtics, who led virtually the entire way en route to their longest winning streak since a nine-game run during the 1992-93 season. Boston led by as many as 26 points in the game's waning moments.

"I think we know what kind of leader Antoine is," Pierce said. "We saw it tonight but we've really seen it the whole season. He's the one who takes the criticism when we don't do well, but he's also capable of carrying this team."

The Celtics improved to 9-4 since O'Brien replaced Rick Pitino as coach. It is the best start for the Celtics under a coach since they began 8-2 with Chris Ford at the helm in the 1990-91 season.

Boston went 12-22 under Pitino, who resigned January 7.

"Even when Rick was coaching this team we knew we had a streak like this in us," O'Brien said. "What I really like about our team right now is the defense. I think we get it defensively. From the rotations to the man-to-man, it's all there."

Andre Miller netted 17 points and Clarence Weatherspoon had 14 rebounds for Cleveland, which suffered its season-high sixth straight loss.

Coming off a disappointing overtime home loss to Detroit on Saturday, the Cavaliers struggled the entire way in this one.

Pierce made a jumper just over two minutes into the contest, giving the Celtics the lead for good, 7-6. Walker scored 11 points and Pierce had eight in the quarter as the lead grew to 32-19.

"We just put ourselves in a hole. I thought that right from the beginning with our turnovers and with them making shots," said Cleveland coach Randy Wittman. "We have to re-evaluate what we're doing in terms of handling the freedom of running the floor like we do."

To make things worse, Cleveland rookie center Chris Mihm aggravated a left knee injury in the first quarter and did not return. He had 14 points and 12 rebounds in Saturday's loss to the Pistons.

Things continued to get worse for the Cavs and Boston extended the margin to 47-27 on Pierce's layup with 7:28 to play before intermission. Boston led 59-42 at the break.

The Celtics were crisp on offense in the opening half, shooting 54 percent (22-of-41) while Cleveland shot 47 percent (18-of-38) and committed 12 of its 20 turnovers.

With the game already firmly in hand, Walker took over in the third quarter, when he made 8-of-11 shots. He scored all but seven of Boston's points in the period.

"Antoine is capable of doing that and we're capable of defending him. But we didn't do a good job of defense all night," Miller said.

"It seems like everybody we're playing right now is hot and every team has a player like Antoine Walker," added Wittman.

Walker also made half his 10 3-pointers. The Celtics were an impressive 13-of-27 from the arc compared to just 3-of-6 for the Cavs.

Eric Williams added 14 points for Boston, which shot 47 percent (39-of-83). Cleveland finished at 43 percent (32-of-75).
