Game Story

HOUSTON (Ticker) -- For one quarter, Hakeem Olajuwon played like "The Dream" again.

Olajuwon scored 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting to spark a huge third quarter as the Houston Rockets overcame a 12-point second-half deficit en route to a 100-86 victory over the New York Knicks.

Olajuwon, 38, is clearly in the twilight of his career and has endured a difficult season in Houston, marred by injury and his recent demands to be traded to a contender after spending each of his 17 seasons with the Rockets.

But the 7-footer from Lagos, Nigeria gave the crowd at the Compaq Center a flashback from his surefire Hall of Fame career during the third quarter. Olajuwon made a layup and converted a three-point play as the Rockets turned a 58-46 halftime deficit into a 64-64 tie with 4:54 remaining in the third period.

"He played great. He dominated both ends of the floor in the third period," New York coach Jeff Van Gundy said of Olajuwon.

"I was very happy to see him play like that," Houston coach Rudy Tomjanovich added. "He was so determined. It seemed like he had his rhythm. I thought he was great."

Olajuwon made two free throws, drilled a 13-footer, fed Steve Francis for a six-footer, and added another basket as Houston built a 76-68 lead with 1:43 left in the third quarter.

"When you play to win, everything takes care of itself," Olajuwon said. "It was a fun game. I was satisfied that I had a big game and we won tonight. The key is how you feel physically. When you know you feel good, you know you can play this way."

Cuttino Mobley capped the period with a jumper at the buzzer as Houston outscored the Knicks, 34-12, over the 12-minute span for an 80-70 advantage. The Rockets overcame a 14-point halftime deficit en route to a 76-75 win at Madison Square Garden in the first meeting between the teams on January 11.

Olajuwon finished with 18 points -- one shy of his season high -- on 7-of-9 shooting and grabbed nine rebounds in 29 minutes.

Allan Houston scored 31 points for the Knicks, who failed to build on Sunday's stirring overtime win at Miami. Marcus Camby scored 14 points and Latrell Sprewell added 13 for New York, which shot 48.5 percent (33-of-68) but made just 13 baskets after intermission.

"I didn't think (Olajuwon) could still do that," Sprewell confessed. "I have a lot of respect for him because he's been a great player for many years. I just didn't think he could still play like that."

Francis had 29 points and 10 rebounds and Mobley added 21 points for Houston, which shot 51 percent (39-of-77) and held a 38-31 advantage on the boards. The Rockets scored 23 points off 17 turnovers.

"When you see a 38-year old run up and down the court like that, it just makes you want to play that much better," Francis said.

Shandon Anderson scored 11 points and Maurice Taylor 10 for Houston, which improved to 12-3 against Eastern Conference opponents.

The Knicks raced to a 37-27 lead after one quarter behind nine points apiece from Houston and Camby. New York did not let up over the next 12 minutes and opened its biggest lead, 58-44, when Chris Childs nailed a 3-pointer with 17 seconds left in the first half.

Carlos Rogers beat the halftime buzzer with a layup as Houston began its comeback.

Francis opened the second-half scoring with a basket and Olajuwon answered a Sprewell jumper with a layup. Taylor hit an eight-foot hook shot, Anderson a layup and Mobley added a basket before Francis' two free throws cut the deficit to 62-58 with 6:19 left in the third quarter.

"In the second half, we came out with no energy and they got their crowd into it," Sprewell said. "They started shooting well, we turned the ball over and they got fast-break opportunities. They played a great third quarter and once they got the momentum, they ran with it."

Houston hit a 20-footer but Francis responded with a 3-pointer before Olajuwon drove hard to the basket and drew a foul from Camby while making a layup. He knocked down the ensuing free throw, forging a 64-64 tie.

Houston made a jumper but Olajuwon answered with a free throw and a layup, putting the Rockets in front, 67-66, with 3:50 left in the third quarter.

"Anytime anyone has that much game, you know it's in him," Houston said of Olajuwon. "Unfortunately, it came out tonight."
