Game Story

BOSTON (Ticker) -- Antoine Walker and Paul Pierce are orchestrating a revival at FleetCenter.

Walker scored 36 points and grabbed 13 rebounds and Pierce added 27 points, hitting seven key free throws down the stretch, as the Celtics edged the Milwaukee Bucks, 94-91, for their seventh victory in eight games.

Boston won its fifth straight home game and improved to 10-5 since Jim O'Brien took over coaching duties from Rick Pitino and the Celtics have also breathed new life into a dormant FleetCenter.

Trailing for most of the second half, the Celtics took the lead for good, 79-78, when Pierce converted a three-point play with 5:12 to play, bringing the crowd of 13,493 to its feet, which was how it remained for most of the remainder of the contest.

"I think our fans have been great, loud and that helps our confidence down the stretch," Walker said.

Walker followed with a 3-pointer and added a free throw and Pierce made a layup as Boston clung to an 85-81 advantage with two minutes left.

The first-place Bucks would not go away and got within one when Tim Thomas drained a 26-footer with 58 seconds remaining. Pierce made sure the Celtics did not squander the advantage, making seven straight free throws thereafter.

"We started answering questions -- can we bounce back?," Pierce said. "It was a tough loss against Toronto (on Monday), but tonight we proved ourselves against a quality team. It feels good for us to be in this position before the All-Star break. You can tell by the excitement in the locker room."

Absent from the postseason in each of the previous five seasons, the Celtics (22-27) moved one-half game ahead of idle Indiana for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

"To make that run and to get up into eighth place, that was our goal and they achieved our goal," O'Brien said.

Thomas scored 21 points and Ray Allen had his first career triple-double with 20 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds for the Bucks, who had a three-game winning streak snapped.

"We did enough things to win but we weren't as sharp as we could have been," Milwaukee coach George Karl said. "We didn't play well enough. We didn't get enough breaks and we came up short."

Bryant Stith scored 11 points for Boston, which shot just 34.5 percent (30-of-87) but outscored the Bucks, 28-16, at the line and committed a season-low six turnovers. Pierce established career highs, making 16-of-19 free throws.

The Celtics scored 20 points off 16 turnovers and held Milwaukee to 37 percent (32-of-87) shooting.

Glenn Robinson had 18 points and a career-high 15 rebounds and Sam Cassell added 14 points for the Bucks, who won the battle on the boards, 62-46.

Trailing by one at the half, the Bucks took control early in the third quarter when Cassell hit two free throws and Robinson and Allen buried back-to-back 3-pointers to give Milwaukee a 53-46 lead with 8:58 remaining.

Boston proceeded to move within a basket of evening the contest on seven separate occasions before Walker made two free throws to forge a 76-76 tie with 6:09 to play.

Cassell answered with a jumper but Pierce drove the basket on Boston's ensuing trip, drawing a foul from Allen while making a layup to knot the contest at 78-78. He added the free throw to put the Celtics in front to stay.

"I think the loss will take a little confidence away and our shots weren't falling," Allen said. "When the other team doesn't have fear, then they get a little confidence and get going."
