Game Story

MINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Kevin Garnett and the Minnesota Timberwolves used a record-setting first quarter to extend their franchise-record winning streak to 11 games with a 117-88 rout of the Sacramento Kings.

Garnett scored 17 of Minnesota's franchise-high 41 first-quarter points and tied his career high with 40. He also set two club records by making 17 shots overall and 13 in the first half.

The Timberwolves set new franchise marks with eight blocks in the first quarter and 11 in the first half. They were led by Radoslav Nesterovic, who had seven blocks, including six in the decisive first quarter, also a Minnesota record.

"I saw him play better yesterday in practice," Minnesota coach Flip Saunders said. "It was nice to see him carry it onto the court."

The Timberwolves have now beaten six of the other eight top teams in the Western Conference during their win streak and are 7-2 against the top five teams in the Pacific Division.

Working primarily against fellow All-Star Chris Webber, Garnett made 17-of-22 shots to go with seven rebounds and six asssits.

"Whenever I play (Webber) I look at it as a challenge because he's the person I idolize," Garnett said.

"Everything KG touched turned to gold," Minnesota forward Wally Szczerbiak said. "It was nice to see him have that kind of game. He's sacrificed a lot of offense during the streak."

Szczerbiak scored 20 points on 8-of-10 shooting and Anthony Peeler added 15 on 6-of-8 shooting, including 3-of-5 from 3-point range. Terrell Brandon had 11 points and 10 assists for the Timberwolves, who have won seven straight home meetings with Sacramento.

Minnesota shot 74 percent (17-of-23) and held Sacramento to 17 percent (4-of-23) in the first quarter. The Timberwolves scored the first seven points on two straight jumpers by Garnett and a 3-pointer from Peeler. They led, 16-8, with 7:14 remaining when the offense exploded.

All five Minnesota starters had scored after a slam dunk by Nesterovic and an 18-foot jumper from Brandon began an 18-0 run that lasted almost five minutes.

"I've never seen a start like that," Saunders said.

Garnett reeled off seven straight points during that stretch and Nesterovic capped it with a hook before Doug Christie scored for Sacramento to make it 34-10 with 1:38 remaining.

However, it was not the beginning of a comeback for the Kings as Minnesota closed the quarter with seven points in a row.

Sacramento's frustration was evident as Webber, Adelman and Christie were all whistled for technicals in the final 30 seconds of the period. Brandon sank all three of the resulting free throws to give the Timberwolves a 41-10 lead after one.

"When someone scores 41 in the first quarter against you, you must look at yourself and say it's too bad, it's embarrassing," Kings center Vlade Divac said.

Minnesota led by as many as 35 points in the second quarter and the Kings never got closer than 27 after the first 12 minutes.

Webber scored 22 points on 10-of-22 shooting. Peja Stojakovic scored just seven points on 2-of-11 from the field for the Kings, who have lost three in a row for the first time this season. They fell to 0-3 on their five-game road trip.
