Game Story

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) -- Apparently, the prospect of falling under .500 was enough motivation for the Charlotte Hornets. Facing the Atlanta Hawks did not hurt.

David Wesley scored 27 points on 11-of-16 shooting as the Hornets snapped a four-game losing streak with a 101-84 victory over the Hawks, who suffered their fifth straight loss.

"We have a goal of scoring 25 points per quarter," Charlotte coach Paul Silas said. "We did that and we ended up over 100 points tonight. All in all, I'm very pleased with this victory. Hopefully, it's a sign of things to come. We really wanted to push it bad tonight."

Winning for just the third time in its last 13 contests, Charlotte (26-25) avoided falling below the break-even mark for the first time since it was 5-6 on November 19.

"It didn't matter who we played tonight," said Charlotte forward P.J. Brown, who grabbed 11 rebounds. "We just needed this win going into the All-Star break to build confidence."

The Hornets closed the first quarter with a 7-0 run to take a 25-18 lead, then broke open the game in the second period. Baron Davis' steal and breakaway dunk at the buzzer gave Charlotte a 56-41 halftime lead.

"Getting off to a good start is always a good thing," Wesley said. "This win puts a good taste in your mouth and it was good because it was a good all-around game, so we know what we are capable of."

Davis added 18 points and nine assists for the Hornets, who shot 49 percent field in the first half before finishing at 45.5 percent (40-of-88). They committed a season-low six turnovers.

"It makes everybody feel good to go out on a positive note," Davis said. "Lately, we have played up-and-down defensively. We have gotten away from what was making us so good, and that was our defense."

Atlanta center Dikembe Mutombo suffered a slightly sprained ankle early in the fourth quarter and did not return, but he will make the trip to Washington for Sunday's All-Star game. With Philadelphia's Theo Ratliff out for a least a month with an injured wrist, Mutombo was named starting center for the Eastern Conference on Thursday.

The Hawks made a run in the third quarter, closing to 69-62 on Lorenzen Wright's dunk with 3:04 left. But the Hornets quickly regained a double-digit advantage and pulled away in the final period.

Davis made two free throws to give Charlotte its biggest lead, 93-73, with 6:10 to play. In its previous five games, the Hornets averaged only 14.5 points in the fourth quarter.

"We've had a tendency to walk the ball up the floor in the fourth quarter lately," Silas said. "We need to continue this type of play in the second half of the season."

"We weren't pushing the ball up the floor," Davis added. "Tonight we got out on the break at every opportunity and started things with our defense."

Charlotte held Atlanta to 42.5 shooting (34-of-80) and converted 18 turnovers into 18 points.

Jason Terry scored 22 points for Atlanta, which has been routed twice by Charlotte this season. The Hawks suffered a season-opening 102-86 home loss to the Hornets.

"Charlotte just contolled the game from start to finish," Atlanta coach Lon Kruger said. "We made two mini-runs, but I don't think we scared them. Charlotte dictated the game and did what they wanted to, both offensively and defensively."

Rookie DeMarr Johnson chipped in 13 points for the Hawks, while Wright contributed 10 and 11 rebounds.

Elden Campbell added 13 points for Charlotte.

"We established a defensive mentality and did things we had gotten away from, such as offensive execution and our transition game," Brown said. "We got to build on this to be successful."
