Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- The Chicago Bulls had not won in so long, they almost forgot how.

The Bulls squandered a 17-point lead but recovered and snapped a franchise-record 16-game losing streak with a 96-92 victory over the Atlanta Hawks.

Ron Mercer and rookie Marcus Fizer scored 19 points apiece for Chicago, which led by 17 points in the second quarter but found itself trailing 82-81 when Atlanta's Brevin Knight made a pair of free throws with 7:26 to play.

The Bulls grabbed the lead for good when Fizer connected on two free throws to give Chicago a 90-89 lead with 2:49 to go.

"Obviously, the playoffs are out of the question," Fizer said. "It is for personal pride now."

Mercer's lefthanded follow shot extended the lead to 96-90 with 15 seconds left. Atlanta's Jason Terry missed a 3-pointer and All-Star Dikembe Mutombo missed a tip as Chicago held on.

Elton Brand and Ron Artest scored 17 points each for Chicago, which won for the first time since defeating Washington at the United Center on January 4.

"When they got up five points, it was `Oh, here we go again,'" Brand said. "But we played hard and got the win at the end. We are 1-0 after the All-Star Game. We want to play Miami and continue our winning streak, instead of start a losing streak."

"That was a real nice win for our guys," Chicago coach Tim Floyd said. "We had a monkey on our backs for about a month. ... It was nice to see our guys rewarded with a win, because they have been doing some things well during the losing streak."

Atlanta was held to 12 points in the first quarter, its lowest total for the opening period all season.

The Hawks scored just 17 in the final period and missed 15 of their last 20 shots. They missed six in a row before Terry went the length of the floor for a layup with 3.1 seconds to play.

Wright and Terry scored 22 points apiece and Mutombo added 19 and 17 rebounds for the Hawks, who dropped their eighth straight game.

"We just didn't do anything in the last five minutes." Wright said. "A loss like this takes a lot out of you. It's frustrating for the whole team and the coaches to lose like this. It's good that we have another game tomorrow so we can forget this."

Bryce Drew hit a 3-pointer and Mercer hit an 18-footer to give the Bulls an 88-87 lead with 3:29 to go. Drew finished with 10 points and nine assists.

Chicago fans basked in the win while streamers and confetti poured in, reminiscent of the championship days.

"It was fun," Drew said. "We are so used to having the big lead and then losing. It was nice to come back at the end and get the crowd back into it and then get the win."

"They hit big shots when they had to." Terry said. "Mercer scored, Drew hit a three with a hand in his face. It was a game of spurts and we knew the one with the last good one was going to win."

The Hawks are last in the league in assists and had just 20 in this one. The reserves were outscored 33-17 and the team went just 1-for-4 from behind the arc.

"We did not take them for granted," Atlanta coach Lon Kruger said. "They just opened up with a lot more intensity than we did. They also made big shots when they had to. That's what got their confidence up and kept them in the game, especially at the end."
