Game Story

INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- The last time the Indiana Pacers were this bad, they entered the NBA record books.

The struggling Pacers scored their lowest total in nearly three years in an ugly 77-66 loss to the Charlotte Hornets, who got double-doubles from Jamal Mashburn and Derrick Coleman.

It was the worst offensive performance for the Pacers since March 28, 1998, when San Antonio held them to 55 points, an NBA record at the time. That mark of futility was passed by the Chicago Bulls, who scored only 49 points vs. Miami on April 10, 1999.

On Tuesday, Indiana shot a season-low 35 percent (29-of-82) from the field while making all six of their season-low foul shots.

Jalen Rose and Reggie Miller -- the Pacers' top two scorers -- were the main culprits from the field, going a combined 10-of-33. They each finished with 11 points.

"We were trying to make a point to keep a hand in their face and keep up the constant pressure," Mashburn said. "They seemed to force a lot of outside shots. We just wanted to play in-your-face defense."

"Sometimes a team comes out sluggish after a break," Rose said. "We were very sluggish with a very lackluster performance. We couldn't get rebounds, our shots would not drop, we just did not play well."

Miller did move pass George Gervin into 23rd place on the NBA's all-time scoring list in the fourth quarter. The sharpshooter, who has spent his entire 12-career with the Pacers, has 20,709 lfetime points.

Charlotte was even worse from the field, shooting just 34 percent (29-of-86). The Hornets made 13-of-18 free throws, went 6-of-15 from 3-point range and held a 59-41 rebounding edge.

"We couldn't make a shot. You hold a team to 33 percent (shooting) in your building and you lose the game," Pacers coach Isiah Thomas said. "We searched and searched all through the bench and couldn't find anyone to make the shots. Consequently it put so much pressure on our defense. This was just a terrible night, a terrible game we played. I don't think either team played particularly great."

Mashburn had 18 points and 11 rebounds and Coleman 14 and 11 off the bench for Charlotte, which has won consecutive games for the first time since winning seven in a row from December 13-26.

"We wanted to establish we could win on the road," Hornets coach Paul Silas said. "We had a terrible slide before the (All-Star) break and we wanted to play well and execute tonight."

Al Harrington netted 12 points to lead the Pacers, who have lost seven of eight following a four-game winning streak.

The defending Eastern Conference champions, Indiana fell to 7-21 vs. teams with records of .500 or better.

Despite their struggles, the Pacers had a 49-48 lead with 5:46 left in the third quarter following a layup by Travis Best. But Charlotte took over from that point.

Coleman, who has battled weight problems this season, had a dunk to put Charlotte ahead for good while triggering a 14-3 run to end the period.

David Wesley nailed a 3-pointer and P.J. Brown converted a layup before Mashburn was good from 17 feet for an eight-point bulge.

Rose temporarily stopped the bleeding by hitting a shot from behind the arc, but Mashburn made a layup and Coleman a 3-pointer, giving Charlotte a 62-52 advantage entering the final period.

Baron Davis made a pair of foul shots with 7:40 remaining, extending the margin to 68-54. But Indiana managed to get back into it.

Rose scored five points in a 10-2 burst that pulled the Pacers within 70-64 with 4:03 to play. Davis, however, drilled a 3-pointer with 2:23 left and Mashburn a 14-footer 35 seconds later to help Charlotte regain control.

Mashburn, who made just 8-of-24 shots from the field, scored 10 points in the opening half to help Charlotte to a 42-38 advantage.
