Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- Looking to end a mini-losing streak, the Milwaukee Bucks were facing the right team.

Sam Cassell scored 25 points and dished out seven assists as the Bucks ended a two-game slide by handing the Atlanta Hawks their seventh straight defeat, 102-98.

Atlanta took a seven-point lead into the final period but did not score for more than five minutes as Milwaukee took control with a 16-0 burst. Cassell made a pair of free throws with 21.6 seconds to play to open a 101-94 cushion.

Lorenzen Wright dunked with 6.8 seconds remaining to get the Hawks within three points, but Brevin Knight fouled Ray Allen, who split two foul shots with 5.3 seconds left to cap the scoring.

"I have no idea how we won that game," Milwaukee coach George Karl said. "They outplayed us. Sometimes life isn't fair. I think our defense stepped it up in the last two to three minutes. That was the key to the game."

Tied at 94-94 with 1:37 to play, Atlanta missed nine straight shots and did not score until Wright converted from the line with 13.9 seconds to go.

"We were losing at first without any effort," Wright said. "I think this is a lot better. We're playing hard, fans are getting their money's worth. We're still trying to figure out how to win games. It's a learning experience right now."

Glenn Robinson knocked down a wide-open 3-pointer from the top of the key to put the Bucks up 99-94 with 33.4 seconds to go.

"It felt like a dagger," Robinson said. "I was wide open. I came up huge at the right time. It just fell for me at the right time. We kind of weren't into it. It kind of felt like practice. We had to find a way to win this game. We had to keep plugging. The game is never over. The same thing that happened to us last night, we did tonight."

Allen scored 13 of his 19 points in the fourth quarter and Robinson added 18 for the Bucks, who improved to 24-10 against the Eastern Conference and moved 3 1/2 games in front of second-place Toronto in the Central Division.

"They just missed shots, we made shots," Allen said. "We made the stops at the end when it counted. It wasn't our best game, but the fourth quarter's where it counts. We buckled down and made them take tough shots. (Jason) Terry was scoring points, but he seemed like he was wearing down. It's a big responsibility."

Jason Terry led all scorers with 35 points for the Hawks, who got a season-high 22 and 18 rebounds from All-Star Dikembe Mutombo. Wright finished with 21 points and 15 boards.

"That loss really hurts," Terry said. "That was probably the best basketball we've played in a long time. It's like having something in your hand and somebody just takes it away from you, like the kid in the candy store whose mom tells him he can't have it."

Atlanta played with only nine players. Point guard Matt Maloney was placed on the injured list before the game and was not replaced on the roster. And forward Roshown McLeod did not dress due to the flu. Alan Henderson did not come off the bench in the second half, leaving only eight Hawks active for the final 24 minutes.

"It's not like we were short of effort. We were going hard," Terry said. "Fatigue probably played a part, but they were hitting big shots."

"You have so many timeouts in a game, how can you get tired?" Karl quipped.

Lindsey Hunter provided a spark off the Bucks' bench with 18 points and Scott Williams chipped in 10 and seven rebounds. Ervin Johnson grabbed 11 rebounds for Milwaukee, which shot 45 percent (39-of-86) from the field.

Knight had a miserable night from the field, going 1-of-10 and scored only two points. But he contributed 11 assists for the Hawks, who had a 50-46 rebounding edge and shot under 42 percent (37-of-89).
