Game Story

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- Jason Kidd recorded his sixth triple-double of the season and Shawn Marion scored a career-high 38 points to go with 12 rebounds as the Phoenix Suns rallied for a 104-96 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Terrell Brandon's basket capped a 7-0 spurt that gave Minnesota an 87-86 lead with 4:12 left. Phoenix scored the next 11 points, including seven by Marion, for a 97-87 lead with just under two minutes remaining. The Timberwolves got no closer than six the rest of the way.

Kidd, who rebounded a missed 3-pointer by Brandon at the buzzer, finished with 19 points, 12 assists and 10 boards for his 33rd career triple-double -- the most among active players.

"The big thing is it all started last night at Golden State," Kidd said. "We're committed to trying to play our best basketball and tonight was a carry over from last night and we had some great performances out there from different guys."

Marion, whose previous career high came on Tuesday against Golden State, made 15-of-22 shots and scored 27 points in the second half. Cliff Robinson added 19 points for the Suns, who improved to 2-0 since the All-Star break.

"Shawn made some very, very athletic plays," Phoenix coach Scott Skiles said. "Shawn was phenomenal. He scored in a variety of ways. He found the seams and gaps and hit his 15-foot shot. When he is making that shot, he is very difficult to defend."

Phoenix shot 53 percent (39-of-74) and made 24-of-29 free throws.

Kevin Garnett collected 20 points and 12 rebounds for Minnesota, which has lost two in a row following a franchise-record 11-game winning streak. LaPhonso Ellis scored 20 points off the bench and pulled down a season-high 13 rebounds.

"I felt we played harder than last night," Minnesota coach Flip Saunders said. "There were two things we couldn't do. One, we couldn't stop Marion, that was the main thing. And down the stretch, we lost a little bit of our composure."

Brandon had 19 points and 13 assists in his head-to-head battle with Kidd while Anthony Peeler scored 12 points on 5-of-13 shooting.

"We talk about the best point guards and going to the Pac-10 and getting them," Brandon said. "You can go down the line from Jason Terry, Bibby, Payton, myself, Jason (Kidd), Robert Pack, Darrick Martin, right on down the line. I think it's a nice fraternity that we have."

Wally Szczerbiak score 14 points despite battling foul trouble throughout the contest. The Timberwolves shot 42 percent (38-of-90).

Minnesota scored the final seven points of the second quarter for a 50-45 halftime lead. A basket by Radoslav Nesterovic gave the Timberwolves a 52-46 advantage 2 1/2 minutes into the second half.

Phoenix responded with a 7-0 run, including three free throws by Kidd, to grab a 53-52 lead with 8:08 to go. The Suns led 71-67 heading into the final period.

The Suns' Tom Gugliotta missed the game to be with his family as a result of his mother's death late Tuesday night.
