Game Story

ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- Even when he is feeling under the weather, Tracy McGrady can dominate a game.

Despite feeling ill, McGrady scored 35 points, including 10 during a key third-quarter run, to spark the Orlando Magic to heir season-high eighth straight win, 108-93 over the Houston Rockets.

"I would have gotten 50 (points) but I wasn't trying to get it," McGrady said. "I was just playing as the game went on. I was kind of congested right now and not feeling so well but I think once I got to running, I was doing OK."

"Tracy McGrady really came with it tonight," Orlando coach Doc Rivers said. "He was very difficult for the Rockets to guard. He stayed on the post. He knew that was his advantage and he took advantage of it."

The Magic tied the second-longest winning streak in franchise history. They had not won eight straight since a nine-game run from November 12-December 2, 1994, the season they went to the NBA Finals.

Orlando shot 51 percent (44-of-87) from the floor, made 17-of-21 from the line and collected 15 steals in a dominant performance.

"They wanted to play at one speed and I thought we had to play at another speed," Rivers said. "Our guys did a good job of keeping our tempo and I thought that was the key to the game."

Orlando's Darrell Armstrong had 20 points and nine assists. Rookie Mike Miller added 14 points and Michael Doleac added 11 on 5-of-8 shooting off the bench for the Magic, who won their 12th consecutive meeting with Houston.

"We're going to check the freakin' water next time because we havent had a good game here since '95," said Houston coach Rudy Tomjanovich, referring to Houston's four-game sweep of the Magic in the 1995 NBA Finals.

McGrady made 16-of-24 shots, including four without a miss in a 20-4 run that gave the Magic a 72-49 lead with 6:35 to go in the third quarter. The All-Star swingman capped the run with a 3-pointer from the right sideline and Orlando led by as many as 25 in the quarter.

"That's what we've been improving on," McGrady said. "We've just got to come out of the third quarter like it's the beginning of the game. Make a standpoint of being aggressive right away and put them away."

The Magic held an 83-66 lead entering the fourth quarter but the Rockets slowly climbed back within nine with 5:13 remaining.

"The other team is always going to make a run and we understand that," McGrady said.

"It's tough when you're up 20," Miller said. "It's easy to get back in the game, really. That's what we would always do when we were down 20."

After McGrady and Doleac both made just 1-of-2 from the line, Armstrong sank a runner in the lane and, after Houston's Kenny Thomas hit a hook shot, made two free throws to make it 102-89 with 2:55 to play.

With the game tied, 32-32, in the second quarter, Orlando took the lead for good when Doleac drilled a 20-foot jumper to spark a 12-2 run. Doleac scored four points in the spurt and McGrady netted six, including the last four.

The Rockets reeled off five straight points but the Magic used a 6-1 spree, capped by a 13-foot jumper from McGrady, to take a 50-40 lead with 1:12 to go in the first half.

The Rockets shot just 43 percent (34-of-78), made 2-of-15 from the arc and committed 22 turnovers -- 21 in the first three quarters.

"In the first half we couldn't get any shots and we shot a good percentage," Tomjanovich said. "In the second half we got shots and cut our turnovers and couldn't make shots so our percentage was low."

Houston's Cuttino Mobley scored 31 points, shooting 8-of-13 from the floor and 14-of-16 from the line. Hakeem Olajuwon added 16 points, 15 rebounds and three blocks but committed five turnovers.

Thomas added 13 points on 6-of-11 shooting and Steve Francis also collected 13 for the Rockets, who had their four-game winning streak snapped.
