Game Story

PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) -- Allen Iverson wasted no time getting Larry Brown his 1,000th pro coaching victory.

Iverson scored 20 of his 42 points in the first quarter as the Philadelphia 76ers jumped out to a big lead and held on for a 108-93 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers.

"We started off well," Iverson said. "We knew we couldn't let down after playing the way we did against the Lakers (a 112-97 win Wednesday). We couldn't come in here and play bad on our court against the Clippers."

Iverson, who took over the NBA scoring lead Wednesday, built on his standing with his biggest quarter of the season. Using his speed on both ends of the court, the All-Star Game MVP made five layups and four steals as Philadelphia raced to a 36-18 advantage.

The young Clippers trailed by 21 points in the first quarter but rallied and made a game of it. They got as close as six points in the third quarter before the 76ers finally put them away for good.

The win improved Brown's all-time NBA record to 771-600 in 20 seasons in the NBA. Coupled with his 229-107 mark over four seasons in the ABA, the 60-year-old Brown is 1,000-707 as a pro coach.

"It's a thrill," said Brown, who has downplayed milestones in the past. "I said a long time ago that I'm doing exactly what I want to do. I'm pretty fortunate. It's nice with this group and this staff. I've enjoyed every place I've been, but this is a basketball town and I've got a bunch of guys who try to play the right way. That's how I was taught to coach."

"It was a great feeling just being a part of that," Iverson said. "Not to many coaches on a level like this win that many games. He did it. Just being around the time I've been around him, I see how he did it."

The milestone win came against Clippers coach Alvin Gentry, one of Brown's many disciples. Gentry was on Brown's staff at the University of Kansas.

"I wish it had not come against us," Gentry said. "I am happy for him and I think he is the best coach in the NBA. I have said that all along and I will stand by that. What he can do is take teams and define roles and guys buy into what he is trying to do and because of that this team is very successful. At the start of the season, if anyone had picked them to have the best record in the NBA -- I don't think anybody would have taken bets on that."

Tyrone Hill had a season-high 18 points and 13 rebounds for the Sixers, who have won three straight games coming out of the All-Star break to improve the league's best record to 39-14.

"Tyrone was Tyrone," Brown said. "It was a solid game. I'm really proud of this team."

Iverson has scored 40 or more in all three and again drew chants of "MVP" from the First Union Center crowd. He made 16-of-31 shots and 8-of-12 free throws in his 12th 40-point game of the season.

"The guy is the MVP of the league," Gentry said. "He plays on the team with the best record and he is the best player. I don't see any reason why he would not be the MVP of the league."

Eric Piatkowski scored 19 points and rookie Darius Miles added 17 for the Clippers, who have dropped the first four of an eight-game road trip.

The Sixers never trailed, scoring the first 11 points. With 5,000 fans holding bobble-head replicas of Iverson, he came out bouncing all over the court with a 3-pointer between two pairs of foul shots.

He had a layup and a three-point play to push the lead to 31-12 and added a 14-footer under a minute later to give Philadelphia its largest advantage at 35-14.

"The little kid got us off to a great start," Brown said.

The Clippers used the 3-pointer to get back in it in the second quarter. They made three and took advantage of some sloppy play by the Sixers to cut the halftime deficit to 55-45.

"They stayed in the game the way they're supposed to," Iverson said. "They're an NBA team and we didn't underestimate them."

But every time the Clippers made a push, Iverson responded. A layup by Piatkowski pulled Los Angeles within 63-57 with 5:47 to play in the third quarter but Iverson answered with a jumper to start a 6-0 burst.

The Clippers clawed back to 74-66 late in the period and Iverson drilled a 3-pointer to restore a double-digit lead. And after Philadelphia saw an 89-72 lead dwindle to 91-81 with 5:25 to go, Iverson beat the shot clock with a 22-footer and Los Angeles got no closer.

"Every time we got into a working distance, Allen just seemed to make a play," Gentry said. "He either made a jump shot or drove the ball to the basket and found someone else."

Aaron McKie scored 11 points and Nazr Monhammed added 10 for his second straight double-digit game for the Sixers, who shot 47 percent (41-of-88) and held a 51-35 rebounding advantage.

The little-used Mohammed started his second straight game in place of the injured Theo Ratliff and the suspended Matt Geiger, who served the second of his two-game NBA ban for steroid use.

Lamar Odom and Corey Maggette scored 12 points each for the Clippers, who also shot 47 percent (34-of-73), including 7-of-18 from behind the arc.
