Game Story

MIAMI (Ticker) -- Cliff Robinson scored 25 points and the Phoenix Suns nearly ended one of the longest streaks in the NBA with a 100-85 victory over the Miami Heat, who have lost three straight games.

Rodney Rogers scored 22 points and Shawn Marion added 18 for the Suns, who never trailed after the first six minutes and turned the entire fourth quarter into garbage time.

That benefited Miami, which came in having made a 3-pointer in a record 561 straight games but missed its first 10 shots from behind the arc. Anthony Carter kept alive the streak with a 3-pointer with 21 seconds to play.

"I didn't know about it," Carter said. "I thought the fans were going to get something free."

Phoenix shot 52.5 percent (42-of-80) from the field as it won for the fourth time in five games since the All-Star break, with the only loss to league-leading Philadelphia.

"The guys are feeling pretty good about themselves and we'd like to go out and finish the trip off with another win (at New York on Friday)," Suns coach Scott Skiles said.

Brian Grant scored 21 points for Miami, which is going in the opposite direction. The Heat have lost three in a row for the first time since a four-game slide from November 22-28.

"This was just an exhibition of one team totally outclassing the other team, outcoaching the other team, out-everything the other team," Heat coach Pat Riley said. "We just didn't have it tonight."

Riley thought his group may have been tired. Both teams were coming off road games Tuesday but the Suns were the fresher group. The Heat may have been physically and emotionally spent from a 76-74 to the archrival New York Knicks.

"I see a very tired team," Riley said. "We have always been able to respond, but I saw a tired team tonight."

"There was some fatigue out there, along with Phoenix shooting great," said Heat All-Star forward Anthony Mason, who managed 12 points. "We just didn't play with much energy."

Marion was not leeting the Heat off the hook that easily.

"They lost last night to New York by two points so that was a close game," he said. "But we still won in Orlando last night. Both of us were playing back-to-back so we had more energy and we wanted it more."

That was evident very early as Phoenix took the lead for good at 10-8 on Marion's basket with 6:27 left in the first period. Robinson scored 11 points in the quarter, which ended with the Suns holding a 28-20 lead.

"We started off well and maintained intensity throughout the game," Robinson said. "We did a really good job moving the ball, getting open shots and putting pressure on their defense by driving when we had the opportunity to do so."

The Heat closed to 36-34 midway through the second period on a dunk by Grant but Phoenix closed the quarter with an 18-6 run featuring five points from Tony Delk and four each from Marion, Robinson and Rogers.

Miami trailed 54-40 at halftime and still was hanging around at 66-49 midway through the third quarter when Phoenix turned it into a rout with 10 straight points. A free throw from Jason Kidd, who hadned out nine assists, made it 73-49 with 2:03 to play.

"They ran by us, ran around us and they moved the ball around us better than any other team this year," Riley said.

Vinny Del Negro scored 10 points for the Suns, who held a 46-32 advantage on the glass. Carter scored 19 points and Eddie Jones added 16 for the Heat, who shot 46 percent (34-of-74).
