Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Brian Shaw made up for the absence of Kobe Bryant with a season-high 22 points and Shaquille O'Neal scored 30 to lead the Los Angeles Lakers to a 113-106 victory over the surprisingly competitive Atlanta Hawks.

Shaw shot 10-for-15 from the field while playing in place of Bryant, who has missed the last two games with a sprained ankle.

"They turned their backs on me a lot tonight and I was able to cut, and Shaq was hitting the open cutter," Shaw said. "We're starting to play better off the ball than we have all season and we're seeing the results when we do that.

"(Coach) Phil (Jackson) kept telling us that the most important game after a long road trip is the first one. You kind of get soft after being on the road. It's natural to say, `Oh, we're tired.'"

O'Neal grabbed eight rebounds and tied a season high with eight assists while rookie Mike Penberthy contributed 16 points as Los Angeles returned from a season-high six-game road trip and recorded its fourth straight home win. The Lakers have won three in a row overall.

"That was typically a difficult game for us," Jackson said. "Injury-wise, we need Kobe or (Ron) Harper back. Kobe should be back on Sunday. We need to have motivation and confidence going into March."

Chris Crawford scored a career-high 27 points and Jason Terry had 25 for the Hawks, who played their first game since revamping their roster before Thursday's trading deadline.

"I didn't step up and meet the challenge," Terry said. "They didn't have Kobe and I still gave up 22 points to Brian Shaw."

Atlanta, which is 2-2 on a five-game trip, traded All-Star center Dikembe Mutombo and forward Roshown McLeod to Philadelphia for forwards Theo Ratliff and Toni Kukoc, center Nazr Mohammed and guard Pepe Sanchez.

"Obviously, this is just the ealy stages of a lot of work we've got ahead," Atlanta coach Lon Kruger said. "Anytime you change four guys, you get four new guys in, even though we only had a couple of them tonight, it is a new beginning and we have to get a feel for each other. It's going to be a work in progress for a while."

Neither Ratliff, who had wrist surgery on Wednesday and will be out until at least mid-March, nor Kukoc played. Mohammed had seven points and seven rebounds while Sanchez did not score in three minutes of action.

"It went well with Sanchez and Mohammed," Terry said. "We still have two more guys that we are waiting for, but it's only going to make this team better. We have 25 games, but we're looking to get better with each game, practice and opportunity."

O'Neal and Los Angeles took full advantage of Mutombo's absence, outscoring the Hawks, 62-34, in the paint.

"It's hard to lose a game when you have Shaq and they don't have a center," Penberthy said. "We knew we could dump it in and they could pick their poison, really. If they want to sink, they leave me open or Rick or Brian, guys that can shoot. Or Shaq can just dominate."

Despite being undermanned, the Hawks were able to keep things close in the first quarter. They trailed just 26-25 with 2:05 left before Los Angeles closed the period with an 8-2 run.

The Lakers took their largest lead, 63-45, with 1:45 to go in the second quarter on a driving layup by Shaw and went into halftime with a 67-50 advantage.

Los Angeles maintained a double-digit lead throughout the third quarter and most of the fourth.

The closest the Hawks got was seven points on three occasions, the last with 10 seconds left as Terry made a driving layup. But it was too late for Atlanta to avoid its 11th consecutive road loss to the Lakers.

"I thought the guys, especially in the second half, really battled and fought," Kruger said. "I thought the second half we were more aggressive, more assertive, initiated the activity a little more, especially defensively. But they're awfully good."

Eight seconds before Terry's layup, rookie Devean George made two free throws that earned free Mexican fast food for fans as the Lakers topped the 110-point mark. It is a promotion that caused a melee in Dallas last week. There were no incidents Friday night.

"I think all the players went to redeem that coupon," Jackson joked. "I told them they could have their damn chalupas."

Isaiah Rider scored 14 points and rookie Mark Madsen had 10 for the Lakers, who shot 51 percent (46-for-90) from the field.

Lorenzen Wright chipped in 18 points and Dion Glover added 11 for Atlanta, which shot 47 percent (43-for-92) but was beaten on the boards, 45-39.
