Game Story

BOSTON (Ticker) -- The Boston Celtics were glad to be home.

Antoine Walker and Paul Pierce combined for 49 points as the Celtics posted an 85-82 victory over the Seattle SuperSonics.

Fighting for the final Eastern Conference playoff berth, the Celtics were returning home after completing a 2-5 road trip with four straight losses.

Walker scored 25 points and Pierce netted 12 of his 24 in the fourth quarter for the Celtics, who pulled within 1 1/2 games of eighth-place Indiana for the final playoff berth in the East.

"Our fans helped us. It's nice after you go on a little road trip," Boston coach Jim O'Brien said. "We're going to have to beat some mighty, mighty good basketball teams on this floor. I can't emphasize enough how important our fans are."

"This is the situation we wanted to be in... only being a few games out of the final playoff spot," Walker said. "Obviously, we would have liked to get more wins on the road trip, but we are happy about this win."

Walker and Pierce combined to score 12 of the Celtics' final 14 points after Seattle took a 73-71 lead with 6:17 remaining on a 3-pointer by Shammond Williams.

"It was an ugly game where a lot of things didn't go right, but we said it was a must-win game," Pierce said. "It wasn't pretty but we got the job done."

Williams scored 21 points -- all in the second half -- and Gary Payton added 20 and eight rebounds for Seattle, which lost for the fifth time in its last six games. The Sonics are 10th in the West, four games behind eighth-place Minnesota.

A 3-pointer by Bryant Stith gave the Celtics a 68-62 advantage with 10:49 to play in the fourth quarter.

But Seattle answered behind Williams, who scored nine points in an 11-3 surge, including consecutive 3-pointers that provided the Sonics with a 73-71 lead.

Pierce hit a 12-footer to tie it and Walker added a pair of free throws with 4:49 left to put Boston ahead for good, 75-73. Pierce made two more from the line with 2:35 to go for a four-point lead.

After Williams sank a jumper, Walker and Pierce each hit 19-footers for an 81-75 advantage with 64 seconds left.

Walker added 13 rebounds and seven assists. But he was not mistake-free, committing eight of the Celtics' 21 turnovers.

Pierce made 8-of-16 shots from the field, including 3-of-4 shots from behind the arc. Boston went 12-of-24 from 3-point range.

"They shoot a lot of 3's. They live on that shot. They are going to win or lose that way," Payton said.

Stith and Eric Williams each added 13 points for the Celtics, who shot 43 percent (30-of-70) and held a 42-40 rebounding edge.

The Celtics took their biggest lead of the contest, 44-34, with 1:23 left before halftime on a 3-pointer by Walker, who scored 19 points in the half. Boston held a 44-36 lead at the break.

Seattle battled back in the third quarter, using a 22-12 burst to open a 58-55 advantage on an eight-footer by Patrick Ewing. Shammond Williams, who made all seven of his shots in the second half, had eight points in the surge.

"I got more into the groove (in the second half) after Emmanuel Davis went out of the game," Shammond Williams said. "I just got the opportunity to play."

Ewing finished with 11 points and 11 rebounds and Rashard Lewis netted 15 points for Seattle, which shot 41 percent (31-of-76).
