Game Story

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) -- The Charlotte Hornets seem to bring out the worst in the Indiana Pacers.

One day after tying a franchise record with 14 3-pointers, Indiana barely shot 30 percent from the field and suffered an 82-72 loss to the Hornets that snapped a four-game winning streak.

For the Pacers, Monday's game was a virtual replay of their 77-66 home defeat to the Hornets on February 13, Indiana's lowest total in nearly three years.

Monday's defeat dropped the Pacers' lead over the Boston Celtics to 1 1/2 games in the battle for the final Eastern Conference playoff spot.

Jamal Mashburn helped Charlotte put away the Pacers, scoring 14 of his 24 points in the fourth quarter, including back-to-back 3-pointers that gave the Hornets a 71-59 cushion with 4:28 left. Mashburn made his final five shots.

"Whenever we need it, Mash comes up big," Charlotte coach Paul Silas said. "We didn't set the world on fire and we didn't come out with our 'A' game but we won."

Jalen Rose tried to provide a spark for Indiana, scoring the Pacers' first 10 points of the period, including a jumper that pulled them within 63-59 with 6:54 left. Rose scored 26 points and Reggie Miller had 24 to combine for more than two-thirds of Indiana's points.

The Hornets shot just 35 percent (29-of-83) from the field and the Pacers 34 percent (24-of-70). Indiana also was outrebounded, 55-43.

"The story of the game is we didn't rebound," said Indiana forward Jermaine O'Neal, who collected 11 points and 16 boards. "We held their shooting but they had second-chance points. We just can't give up two or three shots, or they will make one of them."

The Pacers were shorthanded as Al Harrington was sidelined with a sprained left ankle and Austin Croshere played only nine minutes after suffering a hand injury.

But after shooting a season-high 57 percent and making 14-of-19 3-pointers in Sunday's 110-100 victory over Minnesota, the Pacers came into Monday's contest with momentum and jumped to a 10-2 lead in the first 3 1/2 minutes.

"It just came down to rebounding," Indiana coach Isiah Thomas said. "It's unfortunate, the way we play defense. We play defense as good as anybody. The guys work hard defensively but can't come up with rebounds off misses. Charlotte had 13 more shots than us."

Indiana went into a prolonged scoring drought, managing just one point over the final 8:34 of the period. The Hornets weren't much better but managed a 15-11 lead after the first quarter.

"I think our defense has been good lately," Charlotte guard David Wesley said. "That's what's been saving us. I think we did a good job on defense tonight. We never let them get a rhythm and I think that's why they missed some shots."

The offenses improved in the second period as Charlotte outscored Indiana, 26-21, to take a 41-32 halftime lead. Miller drilled a 3-pointer with seven-tenths of a second left in the third to bring the Pacers within 57-51 after the final period.

Rose tried to take over early in the fourth but got little help as no other Pacer scored in the quarter until Miller made a jumper with 3:37 to go.

After Rose's basket made it 63-59, Wesley, who scored 13 points, answered with a 20-foot jumper. Mashburn's consecutive 3-pointers sealed the victory.

"Mash had some big threes the other night," said Silas, referring to Charlotte's 86-85 win over Philadelphia on Saturday. "And he came up big in the fourth quarter. That's why he makes the big bucks."

Elden Campbell added 11 points and was the Hornets' leading scorer before Mashburn's big fourth period.

The Hornets have won four straight and six of their last seven. They took three of four meetings from the Pacers this season.

"We have to continue to play good defense," Silas said. "Our shots have been so off. It we could make some shots, we could blow teams away. Our rebounding and defense has been carrying us."

"As long as you come out on top, that's all that matters," Charlotte forward P.J. Brown added. "It was a tremendous win. We're playing hard. We have a great homecourt advantage."
