Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- For Lenny Wilkens, the third time was a charm.

Wilkens earned his first win over his former team since taking the Toronto Raptors' job as Vince Carter scored 32 points in a 95-88 victory over the Atlanta Hawks.

Wilkens, who spent the previous seven seasons with the Hawks, suffered a 102-97 loss on January 31 in his first trip back to Atlanta. The Hawks also beat the Raptors in Toronto, 78-72, on December 22.

Toronto (31-27) has won three straight since falling to just one game over .500.

"I hate the fact that we had back-to-back games," said Wilkens, whose club beat Cleveland -- another of his former teams -- at home on Tuesday. "You get in here at 2:30 in the morning. They (Raptors) showed a lot of character. We wanted to get the win. We wanted to put something together."

Carter is averaging 32 points in his last six games and reached the mark for the second straight game. Antonio Davis recorded his 29th double-double with 18 points and 15 rebounds.

Atlanta went 2-12 in February, its worst month since going 1-13 in January 1981.

Down by as many as 14 points in the second half, the Hawks closed to 90-88 on a jumper by Jason Terry with 2:02 remaining but the Raptors closed the game with a 5-0 spurt.

Williams hit a layup with 1:24 left and Davis made a pair from the line for a 94-88 bulge with 30 seconds remaining.

"We did what it took to get the job done," Carter said. "We're just trying to get as many wins as possible. We're not looking at how we get them. We're just trying to win. Our purpose is to get as many wins over .500 as possible."

Terry scored 22 points and Brevin Knight added 20 for the Hawks, who have won just four times in their last 21 games dating to January 15.

"This is about us getting better," Knight said. "I think we're taking strides. We have new people -- people that can definitely help us out. We have to continue to work individually to get better."

Toni Kukoc, who was acquired in the trade that sent Dikembe Mutumbo to Philadelphia, scored 12 points in his first appearance with the Hawks. He had missed three games with back spasms.

"I tought we had a chance to win the game," Kukoc said. "We put ourselves in a hole but we fought back and ran out of energy at the end."

Carter's 22-footer gave the Raptors a 67-53 lead with 7:48 left in the third quarter before Atlanta made its run. The Hawks closed to 83-82 on Knight's two foul shots with 5:16 to go but never got the lead.

Carter took matters into his own hands, hitting a short jumper and 3-pointer to make it 88-82 with 4:26 left. After Terry's 20-footer pulled Atlanta within two, Carter missed a pair from the line with 1:34 left.

But the rebound went out of bounds off the Hawks and Williams' jumper gave Toronto a four-point margin.

The Raptors outrebounded the Hawks, 54-39, and had a 22-8 edge in second-chance points. That especially hurt Atlanta in the final minute.

After Kukoc missed a 26-footer, Toronto got three chances before Davis' two foul shots gave the Raptors a six-point cushion. Carter completed the scoring with 1-of-2 from the line with 15 seconds left.

"We got it down to two, but we just couldn't get it over the hump," Atlanta coach Lon Kruger said. "Boards were such a big key. Their second-chance points and their ability to get missed shots back turned out to be a big key in thge ballgame."

Charles Oakley grabbed 11 rebounds to become Toronto's all-time leader with 1,449, one more than former Raptor Doug Christie.

"Antonio Davis will break it," Oakley said.
